Welcome to our 7th issue of Softpedia Linux Weekly! In this edition, you can read about the inclusion of the Alfresco Labs and Yahoo!'s Zimbra Desktop in Ubuntu Linux, the new features of ClarkConnect 4.3 and Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 4 (plus a nice screenshot tour), and the new Persistent Live CD from Scientific Linux. You can also read a good review of EnvyNG, a nice test driving of the new GNOME edition of Zenwalk Linux, and don't forget to check out the Linux distributions released last week, at the end of the article!

Summary:

The leader in open source enterprise content management, Alfresco Software, announced a few days ago that Alfresco Labs 3 would be offered by Canonical within a pre-built software download in the Ubuntu operating system. New users can now be reached by Alfresco, as they are a simple apt-get away from executing a full installation.

Martin Musierowicz, VP Alliances, Alfresco Software, commented: "Ubuntu is fast becoming the new star of Linux as demonstrated by the findings of Alfresco's most recent Open Source Barometer. Accounting for nearly a quarter of all Linux OS rollouts as of January 2008, Ubuntu was also the fastest growing Linux distribution over the second half of 2007. With the backing of a professional organization such as Canonical, we're delighted to be driving the growing trend towards easy to install and easy to manage open source products."

"We're excited to work with Alfresco on delivering an enterprise-class content management system for Ubuntu users, for which this is the first step. Users have a great opportunity to assess Alfresco on Ubuntu and see the benefits these two great Open Source solutions can bring organizations. We will jointly deliver a pre-packaged enterprise version of Alfresco later in the year," said Malcolm Yates, Global ISV manager at Canonical.

Yahoo! announced that its application, Zimbra Desktop, which was launched last month, would be available for the Linux platform. Canonical has just signed an agreement with Yahoo! that will give Linux users the possibility to have offline access to multiple email accounts from the same computer, along with other features provided by Zimbra Desktop. The Ubuntu Partner Repository is the intermediary between Zimbra Desktop and Linux users, and brings them together for a better experience. "Since we first announced general availability of Zimbra for Ubuntu last year, we have seen incredible adoption within the Ubuntu community," said Andy Pflaum, senior director of business management, Zimbra Business Unit, Yahoo!. "We are eager to offer our world-class collaboration experience, Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop, to the vibrant community of Ubuntu users worldwide," he added, showing confidence in the fate of the partnership.

Our new colleague, Mihai Mircea took the beta version of Zenwalk 5.2 GNOME edition Linux distribution for a test drive: "This was my first ever adventure with a Slakware-based GNU/Linux distribution so I cannot say it has been an easy, effortless task, but that's probably just my lack of experience, because, after I finished the installation and testing of Zenwalk 5.2 Beta Gnome edition, it all made much more sense. Still, I would have greatly appreciated a more intuitive installer which could guide through the steps to a trouble-free installation accompanied with slightly (more) detailed explanations, especially at the partitioning stage. And now, let's have a closer look at what this edition of Zenwalk brings to the new Linux user!".

Urs Beyerle announced on Friday the immediate availability of a new version of the Scientific Linux Live CD & DVD editions. Compared with the previous version, the new Scientific Linux 5.2 Live CD/DVD works in persistent mode, which means that it will store/restore your settings if you run it from an USB flash drive. Also, this new feature will allow you to carry the USB stick with you, and boot from it whenever you need a stable and reliable operating system. The main features of Scientific Linux 5.2 Live CD/DVD are:

■ Both Live CD and DVD versions can be installed on a local hard drive; ■ The Live CD will run from an USB flash drive; ■ The Live CD can be used as diskless client (mounted over NFS).

Another week, another review by Mihai Mircea for Softpedia Linux. This time, it's for the EnvyNG application, a smart tool that automates the installation of both ATI and Nvidia's proprietary driver on the Ubuntu operating systems. Read this comprehensive review of EnvyNG 1.1.1 here.
