dots KnoppixOn September 17th, Klaus Knopper announced the latest version of the popular Knoppix live CD/DVD Linux distro that started it all. Knoppix 6.7.1 comes with a lot of bleeding-edge software, along with all of the things you've grown accustomed to. Knoppix 6.7.1 adds support for the experimental Noveau graphic card drivers for Nvidia hardware, which offers accelerated 3D graphics via kernel mode-setting.

The latest release also comes with a new 64-bit kernel option. Using the "knoppix64" boot option, Knoppix 6.7.1 uses a 64-bit kernel, offering support for machines with large amounts of memory. The 64-bit kernel is only included in the DVD version of Knoppix 6.7.1.

dots Linux MintAlso on September 17th, Clement Lefebvre proudly announced the release of its latest update to the "Debian Edition" of the popular and user friendly Linux distro. Linux Mint Debian Edition 201109 is now available in both Gnome and Xfce flavors. Linux Mint Debian Edition 201109 makes the jump to the Linux 3.0 kernel. With that comes a caveat for 32-bit users.

The default kernel in the 32-bit ISOs, for compatibility reasons, is the 486 kernel. This ensures that LMDE runs on a all but the most ancient computers, but it also means that multi-core processors won't be recognized. So, if you have a multi-core processor, or multiple processors on your system, switch to the 686-PAE version of the kernel, available in the repositories.
