The following Linux-based operating systems have been announced last week: ArchBang 2011.09, VortexBox 1.10 and Bodhi Linux 1.2.0. In other news: Linus Torvalds announced that the Linux kernel sources were temporarily moved to GitHub, after kernel.org hack; the KDE developers released KDE Software Compilation 4.7.1. For this week we've prepared an interesting review for the Tab Mix Plus 0.3.8.6 add-on for the Mozilla Firefox web browser. dots GrmlOn September 6th, Willensky Aristide proudly announced the ArchBang 2011.09 operating system. Linux-3-0-4-1-Kernel-220646.shtml">ArchBang 2011.09 is aimed at new users or those wanting a full reinstall, if you already have ArchBang installed on your system, all of the changes and updated packages have been pushed via update channel.

ArchBang 2011.09 also adds a couple of new packages, Paccheck and Gucharmap. The latest release switches to the OSS sound libraries, ditching the more advanced ALSA. Along with it, Volumeicon has been replaced by ossmix. Several packages have been removed entirely. Xcompmngr, tintwizard, gsimplecal, aufs2, hal, dmenu, gksu and the Nouveau nvidia drivers have all gotten the boot.

dots Super OSOn September 7th, Andrew Gillis announced the immediate availability of the VortexBox 1.10 operating system, the media server distro that boasts plenty of fixes and improvements as well as some updated packages.

The previous release dates back to May and VortexBox is updated once every couple of months or so. It took longer this time, but there are things to like in the latest version. The big updates in 220781.shtml">VortexBox 1.10 is a new kernel, but also a new SqueezeBox 7.6.1 server, the core of the entire distro.

dots KororaaOn September 8th, Jeff Hoogland proudly announced, after several months in development, the release of the Bodhi Linux 1.2.0 operating system. Bodhi Linux 1.2.0 comes with plenty of updates packages, but also brings several improvements in the looks department, seven new themes are included, and some better documentation.

There aren't any big new features, but if you want a clean install, 221031.shtml">Bodhi Linux 1.2.0 ensures that you don't spend a lot of time updating after you've installed the distro on your system. Several big core packages have been updated, including the kernel which is now Linux 3.0.0. The Enlightenment window manager has also been updated, it is now based on a very recent SVN version, only a few days old.

So, when the fifth release candidate for the upcoming Linux 3.1 kernel landed, there was no place to publish it. This led to Linus Torvalds publishing the latest code on GitHub rather than on the kernel's own git repository. Maybe your not a big fan of add-ons. It's a well known fact that most Firefox users never even install add-ons, not to mention they use really old versions, but Tab Mix Plus is a jewel and I can't wait to see what other options will the developers integrate in the future.
