On November 16th, Untangle, Inc., through Dirk Morris, announced the release of its popular gateway solution. The Untangle Gateway 8.0 Linux-based operating system provides a large collection of the best open-source applications, designed to improve the stability and security of servers.
Highlights of Untangle Gateway 8.0:
· Linux kernel 2.6.26-2 (with additional features for Bandwidth Control and QoS); · Added the ability to export and import settings and rules in tables; · Added a new "Session Viewer" option to view the sessions that are currently scanned; · Sessions are now shown as stat, at top of rack; · DNS is bypassed by default now; · Added a new ExtJS toolkit for UI; · New QoS implementation for better usability and more functionality; · QoS has now eight priorities, with modifiable behavior for each one; · Added outbound and inbound limiting for QoS; · Added a new session viewer to see session priorities in QoS; · Added Bandwidth Control app for traffic and bandwidth shaping; · Added Bandwidth Monitor app to view sessions in real-time; · The Bandwidth Control app reports for viewing bandwidth usage on the network; · The Bandwidth Control app rules allow for traffic prioritization; · Penalty Box app can now handle misbehaved users; · Bandwidth Control quotas allow for allocation of daily/hourly/weekly bandwidth quotas; · The eSoft Web Filter now uses SNI in order to filter HTTPS traffic by hostname (it reverts to old behavior if no SNI is found); · Added the ability to manually start report generation task in Reports; · The maximum retention time was increased in Reports; · Top CSVs incorporate now all the data (not just top 9); · Various bugfixes for Reports; · Added the ability to view current logged in users in Captive Portal; · Added the ability to force log out the logged in users in Captive Portal; · Fixed a bug for the enable checkbox not working properly issue in Captive Portal; · Directory Connector will no longer count "captive portal user" as a valid user; · Added a "Groups" column to the Status page table of Directory Connector; · OpenVPN wizard was improved; · OpenVPN pushes search domain to connecting clients; · OpenVPN no longer enables the 443 port automatically; · OpenVPN client was updated to version 2.1.3 (supports Windows 7 and Vista); · WAN Balancer sessions created during startup are now handled; · Some UDP fixes.

On November 17th, Unity Linux 2010_02 has been released and it includes a new kernel, the latest Enlightenment 17 environment, and many fixes or enhancements. Unity Linux 2010_02 is dubbed Unite17.
Highlights of Unity Linux 2010_02:
· Linux kernel 2.6.35.7; · The Enlightenment 17 environment has been updated to Beta; · The transparency works flawlessly now, without the need of 3D; · The minimum system requirements have been modified to at least Pentium 3 at 900 MHz CPU, 384MB of system memory, and an OpenGL compatible graphics card; · The size of the ISO has been increased to 2.5GB; · Lots of applications were updated; · Two new add-ons for the Google Chrome web browser were introduced. Chrome TV extension, which allows all the available Internet TV broadcasts to be monitored, and an open-source YouTube video downloading plugin. Both add-ons are automatically updated.

On November 21st, Warren Woodford has announced the immediate availability for testing of the SimplyMEPIS 11.0 Alpha 3 operating system.
SimplyMEPIS 11.0 Alpha 3 brings various small changes since the Alpha 2 release, made available on November 19th. The CD boot issues are now fixed, and various library dependency issues present in the first two Alphas. These bugs were identified by the MEPIS testers.
Download SimplyMEPIS 11.0 Alpha 3 now from Softpedia. Remember that this is an alpha release and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended to be used for testing purposes only.
· Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, and Convirture, a company specializing in software for managing virtual machines and cloud environments, have announced that ConVirt 2.0 Open is now available in the Ubuntu Partner Repository. This provides an easy way for users and companies looking to manage several virtual instances to deploy ConVirt 2.0. Read more about it here.
· Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Nvidia, the two major companies specialized in programmable graphics processor technologies, released new and improved versions of their display drivers for Linux systems, available for both x86 and x86_64 architectures. Read more about it here.
· Novell, a multinational corporation specialized in management solutions and enterprise .operating systems such as SUSE Linux Enterprise, will be acquired by Attachmate Corporation with the measly sum of 2.2 billion dollars. Read more about it here.
