dots VectorLinuxOn August 10th, Robert Lange proudly announced the VectorLinux 6.0 "SOHO" edition operating system. This VectorLinux version aimed at small businesses has finally been updated to match the latest release of the regular distro. VectorLinux SOHO 6.0 brings all of the features included in the regular release, but comes with mostly newer packages. It also packs software useful for small office or home office offerings.

dots UntangleAlso on August 10th, Untangle, maker of the open-source firewall Linux distro with the same name, has announced the release of Untangle Gateway Platform 7.4. The latest update is mostly a bug-fixing release with the focus being on polishing the rough edges.

Highlights of Untangle Gateway Platform 7.4:

· Updated kernel with many bugfixes including HPET-fix; · Updated NIC drivers for some modern cards; · Rename packages to lite/standard/premium; · Added a warning for port 443 port forwards; · Made switching from bridge to static more intuitive; · Added some community skins; · Additional error checking on app installation; · Video-safe-mode is now the default.

dots SalixOn August 12th, George Vlahavas announced the immediate availability of the Salix OS 13.1.1 operating system, the first maintenance release of the Slackware-based Linux distro. Billed as a minor release, it actually brings quite a few changes and updates. There’s a new graphical tool to setup the Lilo bootloader and better administration tools. Also, the 64-bit version of the Adobe Flash Player is gone.

Highlights of Salix OS 13.1.1:

· Lilosetup - a graphical tool to setup and configure the Lilo bootloader that Salix OS uses; · New graphical tools for system administration: · ALSA sound cards configuration; · system hostnames configuration; · tool to rebuild the icon cache in XFCE; · all tools are available in the “basic” install as well; · The installation CDs can now be used as a local repository with slapt-get/gslapt, complete with dependency support; · The start page in Mozilla Firefox is now set to: http://www.salixos.org/start; · Intel graphics driver 2.9.1, an older version, has been included for those experiencing problems with their graphics cards; · The “full” installation now adds the pyxdg, notify-python, libnl and net-snmp packages as well; · Various security and stability fixes for packages updated after the initial release; · Adobe Flash Player has been removed from the 64-bit version of Salix OS.

dots PuppyOn August 13th, Barry Kauler announced the release of Puppy Linux 5.1. Codenamed "Lucid" for obvious reasons, Puppy Linux 5.1 boasts the same features and functionality that made it so popular, but the main distinctive feature is that it enables users to install any packages built for Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx).

Puppy Linux 5.1 is a minor update focusing on several improvements and newer packages. The user interface has gotten most of the attention in terms of usability but also looks. Puppy Linux 5.1 also makes it easy to install the proprietary graphic card drivers suitable for your computer.

· On August 13th we had the pleasure of playing a little with the new Ubuntu installer, present in the latest daily build of the upcoming Maverick Meerkat (Ubuntu 10.10) operating system, due for release in October 10th, 2010. The installer is completely revamped and accessible by Linux beginners. The new installer offers users the possibility of downloading software updates or/and installing proprietary drivers for wireless cards, support for MP3 files, Adobe Flash Player, Java and DVD playback support.
