It is not often that you see a paid screen capturing application that is also worth its price. Instead of paying the $19.99 on its price tag we give you the chance to get Ashampoo Snap by sharing with us your opinion on the product. Just drop a line or two in the comments section below and we’ll award the best of them with a free license.
Besides the regular functionality also available in free products of the same feather, Ashampoo Snap 4 encompasses a set of features to make it worthy of that price tag. As such it not only sports some special picture taking options, but can also record video. But taking snapshots of the desktop is where Ashampoo Snap excels. The huge list of possibilities in this module comprises highlighting multiple areas, several image effects (drop shadow, pencil drawing, grayscale) and image editing. It may look like it is a complicated suite, but in fact Ashampoo Snap can be handled very easily by all sorts of users. The non-standard interface and overall functionality make it stand apart when compared to similar software. Your chances to win one of the 25 free codes are only as good as your comment. So make your remarks as honest and witty as possible. For a deeper look at the features of Ashampoo Snap and the results of our tests you can head to our review page. You have a week to post your message, until Friday, so that you can also test the program for a pertinent opinion. Don't forget that we need a valid contact email address. For a full list of the software featured in our giveaway campaign you can check this article on a weekly basis, check the weekly giveaway tag or receive the info by following the Softpedia Giveaway Twitter account. Note: The winners will be picked from the comments section of this article and we will contact them in 5 days after the giveaway expires. They will have to provide their full name in private (when required) in order to collect their prize. No other information except for the lines of your comment and the alias/nickname will appear online. We urge you not to double post and, most importantly, be original because pasting from different sources on the Internet will kick you out of the giveaway campaign. Giveaway campaign ended on June 03

| Comment #2 by: Alex_mi on 28 May 2011, 11:42 UTC | reply to this comment | Wow, this is true??? It is the program which I want very much, because I often I do screenshots. Ashampoo is a best the firm making the programs. |
| Comment #3 by: Leo on 28 May 2011, 12:00 UTC | reply to this comment | Ashampoo Magical Snap is great software and adds an expandable toolbar to the top of your window that lets you capture entire Web pages or specific selections. It also captures desktop and window screenshots--basically anything that appears on your screen. Once you make a selection, pop-up how-to guides walk you through the editing process. We found them a little overwhelming, and appreciated the option to turn them off. Once you capture an image, the toolbar smartly changes to offer more editing options, and two other expandable toolbars are added to your window for more editing and saving options. We were able to quickly capture whole or partial screens, add basic elements, rotate, and resize the image. Results are saved to your location of choice.
Much like the how-to guides, the Help file is extensive and overwhelming. But once you get the hang of the program enough to not need the guides, it is much easier to navigate. Once you get down to using this smart screen capture tool, you'll like what you see. We recommend it to any user with a need to create, customize, and save images.
Regards! |

| Comment #16 by: paddy on 28 May 2011, 20:58 UTC | reply to this comment | G'Day,
Another very nice giveaway thanks.
Ashampoo Snap4 is a nice screen and video capture utility combination that is priced well below the usual leading softwares, that by the way have to be bought seperately so this is a bargain, however it is not as polished, imho, as the leading brands.
Pros;
Can capture screen shots and video with sound.
Multi mode capture for screens such as region fixed, scrolling window, scrolling webpage, freestyle region and several others available from a top hide away toolbar.
Nice collection of editing options, such as text, callouts, arrows and more.
Nice help/tutorial pages that pop up when using the capture modes and when editing, can be turned off when you get familiar with program.
Skinnable, although only 1 default skin supplied.
Can save output to a variety of formats including pdf.
Cons;
No way to minimize the work area.
Inconsistant methods to adjust properties of tools, some settings are in a popup toolbar at the bottom of the window and some have to be set via the configuration > tools dialog, imho all tools should be adjustable on the fly through the popup toolbar at the bottom of the window.
The eraser is really just a paintbrush that paints over mistakes or areas with a selected colour.
The stamps and objects are png's and so do not scale well.
Video capture uses the same help/tutorial as the screen capture, but the video capture does not actually use the same toolbars so the help could confuse more than help.
Conclusion;
The above are purely personal findings that i came across in use and may not reflect everyones own experiences.
While this software may not be as polished as the market leaders it is a lot cheaper with a nice and simple set of options and a fairly comprehensive set of editing features that i would be happy to own, so please count me in, thanks. |
| Comment #17 by: smaragdus on 28 May 2011, 21:09 UTC | reply to this comment | Ashampoo Snap is one of the good screen capture utilities available. I have an older version and would like to try this one. |
| Comment #18 by: acr on 28 May 2011, 21:36 UTC | reply to this comment | I have used Ashampoo Snap 4 and it is my favorite screen capture program, especially for capturing video. Snap 4's quality of the capture is very good and adds the ability to record sound from either the PC or a mic, I think what sets Snap 4 apart is that it uses low resources when capturing video, compared to other similar programs. |
| Comment #19 by: William Diaz on 28 May 2011, 21:56 UTC | reply to this comment | Ashampoo Snap is a very intuitive software with a friendly user interface. It is easy to use with tons of functionalities. Worth every single peny! |
| Comment #20 by: chandrsaekar on 28 May 2011, 23:45 UTC | reply to this comment | Ashampoo Snap 4 enables you to create high-quality screenshots, videos and demos of your screen content. Edit, save and share your excellent results with others. This new version offers lots of innovative features and improvements, especially in the areas of video capture and editing tools.
The new video mode
Use the video mode to create videos and demos tailored to your needs. Capture film sequences or computer games (in a window) and save them as high-quality video files. You can also produce demos like video tutorials for software or presentations of websites. Videos and demos can be saved in different formats using various codecs. New fantastic features, like cursor and zoom effects, are available during video capture. Furthermore a recording can be paused and resumed anytime, in order to, for example, switch between applications or prepare the screen content. Of course, you are not limited to the main screen anymore, because Ashampoo Snap 4 also supports multi-monitor environments.
Even more editing tools for your screenshots
Create perfect-looking screenshots of your entire screen content or specially selected parts. After making a screenshot, an intuitive editor opens automatically and provides you with extensive editing tools, with which you can make your shots even more individual and original. Enhance your screenshots with, for example informative hints, arrows, texts, graphics, shapes, stamps and lots more, in order to convey facts or other topics in your shots easier and more illustrative.
Whether for work, for school or in your spare time - create screenshots and videos in no time and fill your colleagues, classmates or friends with enthusiasm for your amazing results.

| Comment #22 by: Pradipta on 29 May 2011, 03:55 UTC | reply to this comment | Ashampoo snap is great program for capturing screen. I often use this software to capturing my desktop, make screenshots, etc. It's better than others. :) |
| Comment #23 by: Mr.Dave on 29 May 2011, 04:02 UTC | reply to this comment | I tried it and it's a Snap to use! This program packs a lot of power into a simple interface. The various toolbars group together similar functions so nothing is overwhelming and most everything is a click away. It has such a good range of tools for editing captured images that I will rarely need to use a graphics editor to clean up, annotate, highlight, etc. It can even capture the mouse cursor which is perfect for making tutorials. I need this program mostly for it's ability to capture an entire window even when parts of it are scrolled off-screen. Looking forward to trying video capture, with sound (most competitors do not handle sound well).
So what's not to love? I see no way to adjust the quality when saving as a .jpg file -- not a major issue: just save as .bmp and convert using another program when needed. Also, it eats up 40 MB of memory on my Vista PC, so I would not run it all the time. As another reviewer pointed out, the stamps don't scale well, but they're handy for casual markups. The "marker" tool seems to have no way to select a color and varies with the background color, but in dark areas it's simply not visible.
Overall I like this one a lot. It makes for a quick workflow to capture, edit and save/send/print the results. This would be a very nice license to win! |

Pros:
Plenty of great features, great menus, good user-interface and works easily
Excellent video capture utility with zoom
It makes getting images from websites or from desktop 3 times more easier without hitting PRINT SCREEN(prtsc) and use photoshop/paint to crop it.
It also allows putting extra effects with its built in photo and video editor(highlighting, shapes, arrows).
Summary
I haven't run into any issues with it and it works well without taking too much ram or slowing down the computer |

| Comment #43 by: mariotrz on 30 May 2011, 17:48 UTC | reply to this comment | All Ashampoo products are of high quality - "German Made", and this one is no exception. Screen capture is one of those must have options in any computer. The good times of "print screen" + Paint for a fast retouch are gone forever. There are many free screen capture options around, but in most of them you get what you paid for! Snap 4 has much more options that a simple mortal human being would ever need from a software like this. Enumerate them would be kind of tedious - just go to Ashampoo's home page and check for yourself. I personally like A LOT the save to .pdf option of one or more screens. Take several snapshots, save all of them in a pdf file and e-mail it! Just great! The user interface is very pleasant - not that I give more value to form over content, but, well ... if one can have a beautiful GUI why not! Captures videos, WEB sites and has a very powerful editor. Probably one can find professional screen capture utilities with more options around, but certainly will pay for it!! One negative point that must be mentioned is Ashampoo's offers e-mailing policy! Be prepared to receive several e-mails daily. On the other hand, they have some very good offers for upgrading and buying new products. I just learned to live with it!
My version 3 deserves and upgrade so if I can get the new one, it wold be great! Thanks in advance |
| Comment #44 by: RNiK on 30 May 2011, 18:20 UTC | reply to this comment | ADVICE: Ashampoo Snap 4 is not your usual screen-capture solution!
I tested this software and I can tell you that Snap 4 supersedes similar application. Here you are some PROs:
1. Screen Capture - You can capture any part of your desktop screen(s) (YES, it supports multiple desktop!) in any way you like (complete desktop, active window, region, object, scrolling app and more).
2. Image Editing - You'll get not only the typical features (resize, crop, text, lines, etc...) but in addiction advanced effects, highlight tool, magnifier and more.
3 - Video section - Do you need to make a tutorial? Or do you prefer a screencast? Do you wanna make a computer lesson with audio comment too? Look no further cause Snap 4 can do all of them in a powerful but easy-to-use way.
In the end, Snap 4 in not a capture utility but a complete software suite to transform your screen in something you want to show/share to friends, colleagues and customers. |
| Comment #45 by: Parad0x on 30 May 2011, 18:37 UTC | reply to this comment | Easy to use and have a lots of features.
Just what I need. Thanks. |
| Comment #46 by: vhick on 30 May 2011, 19:37 UTC | reply to this comment | I download this software and try it for a while. What I look for a screen capturing program is capturing the screen in any region of my screen. This is useful for my reports and writing. Also, capturing text is a plus for me to be capture in some important notes. Ashampoo Snap gives me this function in one. I easily capture the whole page and documents for reference in my reports and capturing text is very useful to capture some error text and paste it in browser search bar for research. It perfectly capture my whole documents while scrolling at the end of the page. MS Paint didn't do this so I save time to make all my task. It correctly capture also the text.
I must say that this is a worth piece of software to keep. |
| Comment #47 by: OutEarth on 30 May 2011, 23:49 UTC | reply to this comment | I completely agree . . . Ashampoo Snap is worth its weight in gold! . . . been using Snap-3 for quite a while (I really like programs which make me look like I know what I'm doing...). . . so much more powerful then other screen capture programs costing more than $20. Easy to navigate UI and tons of options . . . make that TWO-TONS of options. Captures are clear and precise . . . I really dig it! . . . As a bonus, most of the Ashampoo programs, in my opinion, seem to be updated quickly and often. They just get better and better, without having to wait a year for an update (only to find yourself immediately waiting for yet another) . . . Whiners beware . . . this one may actually make you happy. . . ;) |
| Comment #48 by: G Rajesh on 31 May 2011, 08:37 UTC | reply to this comment | A great application of Screen capturing, it a like screen capture dock, i have use its version 3, i have read its changelog, and multiple improvements done by ashampoo as compare to version 3 especially in tool area

| Comment #57 by: MarAsmHag on 01 Jun 2011, 20:44 UTC | reply to this comment | Well another nice giveaway from softpedia. Thanks very much.
I have used Ashampoo snap starting with version 2 which was a basic screen capture program with some editing tools. I then upgraded to version 3 which was an improvement over version 2. It had video capturing in addition to screen capturing. This was a nice to add thing to version 3. I have looked at version 4 and it seems that Ashampoo is still adding more to this useful program such editing tools and performance improvements. I really hope to get a free licence of this program. Thanks again. |
| Comment #58 by: Nathan on 02 Jun 2011, 03:04 UTC | reply to this comment | Ashampoo Snap 4 continues to showcase the Ashampoo design philosophy that there is no reason why good features shouldn't be complemented [and enhanced by user perception] by an eye-catching, but not troublesome or confusing GUI. AS' GUI is probably the most "out there" [in visual sence] Ashampoo interface, but its "look good - feel good" factor really makes AS stand apart from the competition. It also exhibits the trademark Ashampoo almost unnatural lightness and speed of response in interaction.
The functionality is separated in 3 bars, displayed around the screen borders, each containing a tool set, split into:
"Capture Bar" at the top, alternating with "Image bar", depending on your current mode - capturing or editing.
"Tools Bar" on the left, containing a wealth of editing options, such as shadows, spotlights, notes, stamps, etc. Some of the similar functions which were separately listed before have been grouped together in v4.
"Action Bar" on the right.
While this may require covering a fair bit of real estate when working and the initial learning curve associated with it, this arrangement does provide you with logically organised and more importantly, clearly separated toolsets and leaves your work take the "center stage"on the screen.
Some of the outstanding features for me:
- Select video codec for video capture - really excellent ability as compared to the old existing functionality (pre version 4): pick a codec and then fine tune parameters such as bitrates, frames per second, etc.
- Additional effects in video capture [zoom and cursor]
- Formatting on any elements added when editing the capture - any graphical element can now be edited and customised to create the look you want. Anything from arrows, stamps, hints, notes can be fine-tuned.
- Multi-screen capture
- Multiple regions capture
- Pausing recording
- Stamp collection - a collection of sleek and professionally looking stamps, a lot more engaging to me than the "flat" look of some of the other editing tools [such as arrows].
Although there are no specific options to control the output picture's quality [apart from type], it's excellent out of the box, unlike some other competitors where I've experienced compression artifacts introduced in capturing. This also applied to the video capture in AS 3.x, where AS managed to to keep the quality really close to the original, although pretty much capturing on "autopilot". In AS 4 you're ultimately in control by being able to select the video quality settings as you need them. The scrolling capture seems to be lagging behind SnagIt with their improved Auto-Scroll [captures both vertically and horizontally], but it shouldn't detract from the overall competency of Ashampoo Snap.
Re-skinning other products or not, Ashampoo's elaborate designs could quite often be a lot more visually compelling and engaging [for me at least - beauty is in the eye of beholder].
Thank you for the opportunity, Softpedia and Ashampoo! I'd like to participate in the giveaway and wish good luck to all Ashampoo Snap license hunters out there - if you win, you'll get a comprehensive feature set presented in quirky, but nevertheless professionally-looking and easy-to-use interface. Happy Snapping! |

| Comment #64 by: GL on 03 Jun 2011, 18:09 UTC | reply to this comment | I have downloaded the trial version of Ashampoo Snap 4. It is not an ordinary screen capture software. Just like what mentioned in the Softpedia Review. I am also on of the user that use print screen button and clipboard paste into an Paint. But this software change my habit.. Normally, I have to press the Print Screen button, open Paint and paste on it and save the file.. Some time, I still need to spend time to think the suitable file name and type the file name. But because of this software, i save a lot of time.. Firstly, i do not need to spend time on naming my print screen files. Ashampoo Snap 4 has it default naming system, which is according to the capture time... So, I can sort my capture file according to time captured. it really save me a lot of time. Further more, it has many useful feature. Such as its ability to capture the Screen as video, Capture Scrolling Windows, capture Free Rectangle Window, Capture Freestyle Region, Capture Fixed Region. It allow me to capture the my screen activity as the video, which i allow me to share it on Social Media sites to discuss the problem encountered with my computer. Furthermore, I like the feature that allow me to edit the captures. For example, add the watermark or description on the capture.. There are also many effect which allows me to edit the capture and do the necessary basic picture editing. It is a must have software and really cannot live without it. I hope that I can convert my trial version of Ashampoo Snap 4 into the full version. Please count me in.. |

The price, 19.95 €, can compete very well with other programs of its kind, so I think Ashampoo Snap 4 is a very good option for everyone who needs to take and manipulate screenshots or to make screencasts. |
| Comment #67 by: Luís F on 03 Jun 2011, 19:36 UTC | reply to this comment | I’ve been using Ashampoo Snap 3 for some time, but Snap 4 has new features I think are worthwhile, namely the possibility to edit objects directly on screenshots and to be allowed to choose between more video formats.
One thing I would like to be able to do, that Snap 4 doesn’t permit, is to define the position of page breaks when a screenshot is to big to be printed in only one page.
Maybe it will be possible in the future. |

I had always wondered how people make those spiffy computer tutorials on youtube with step-by-step screenshots, so I gave this a try (free trial download). I LOVE the interface! Everything flows and is intuitive. I got everything I could out of the free trial and I have been looking for the full software at the cheapest price possible (I'm on a student budget... so basically I have $0.50 to spend on software this month). Thanks for making it a free giveaway, hope I hear back! |
