Sofia Vergara is one of the most appreciated women in Hollywood: talented, with a healthy sense of humor, gorgeous and, last but not least, with a killer body, she is a dream come true. In the latest issue of Shape magazine, she speaks of her much-mediated curvy figure and what she does to keep it in check.

Sofia was so skinny when she was younger that kids her age used to tease her by calling her “toothpick,” she tells the mag.

Later, when she reached puberty, she became so dissatisfied with her ample cleavage that she started telling her mother that she would “cut them off” as soon as she turned 18, she recalls.

Now, at nearly 40 (she's 38), she’s happy with herself, her body and with the fact that she doesn’t have to go to extreme lengths to maintain her figure.

Of course, she works out – even though she hates it. By now, Sofia knows that she must put in the extra hours at the gym if she wants to look her best, a prerequisite in her line of work, in front of the cameras.

“Oh, I hate it! But I also know that at my age – I’m almost 40! – I have to do it to maintain my figure. When I can, I try to do Latin dancing for exercise because it’s so much fun and I just love the music,” she tells Shape.

“Two hours before I go [to the gym], I’m already wishing it was over. I psychologically fool myself into believing it’s part of my job. And then, of course, once I’m done, I’m really glad I did it because I feel so good,” she adds.

She also makes sure she doesn’t overeat, but she does allow herself the occasional treat here and there. Sofia always has cake in the house and her favorite pick-me-up treats include strawberries with chocolate.

“I insist to all my friends that they’re healthy. What? It’s fruit with a little chocolate. It’s hardly anything. The problem is when I eat half a dozen,” she says with a smile.

When she’s not working, Vergara allows herself a margin of 3 to 5 pounds of extra weight, which she puts on without feeling remorse.
