Sofia Vergara isn’t just one of the highest paid actresses in television right now, she’s also one of the hottest presences on the small screen. The 42-year-old mother-of-one tells Shape magazine that, today, she is very strict on the amount of exercise she’s getting, which explains her fabulous figure.

Truth be told now, Sofia has always had this amazing figure – and she’s the first to admit that, until a few years ago, she would rarely bother to work out because her metabolism was doing all the work for her.

Plus, she loves her curves (always has) and she knew people “expected [her] to have them,” and this worked as anti-motivation for getting to the gym.

Regrets, she’s had a few

When she turned 40, Sofia looked in the mirror and realized that her body was changing. “I started seeing a softness everywhere on my body. I read a lot about how your metabolism drops when you age. I knew it was time to do something, so I did,” she tells the publication.

She started going to the gym and she’s a fan of the Megaformer. She takes classes called Strengthen, Lengthen, Tone (SLT) at a New York gym, and after a lifetime of finding excuses not to go for a workout, she’s actually looking forward to it.

This machine is helping her with her bad knees and is shaping up her body in a way she never expected, she’s very honest about it. She has just one regret right now and that’s that she didn’t start taking better care of herself when she was younger, that she didn't take working out as seriously as she does now. She’s convinced she’d feel even better than what she does now if she had.

Finding a way to stay healthy and in shape without feeling like you’re depriving yourself

That’s the key to a satisfying life, Sofia tells Shape. She loves to eat good food and finds a sweet treat almost irresistible, so her idea of perfection consists of finding a balance between leading a very healthy life and indulging.

“My workout motto is really simple: No pain, no cake!” she explains. When I do indulge, I exercise a bit harder the next day. A healthy diet isn't a mystery. Eat your vegetables and stay away from processed foods.”

That’s exactly what specialists also recommend: moderation is essential for a healthy and happy life. Fad diets come and go quicker than you can keep track of them, and in almost all cases, they do more harm than good, leading to even more weight gain.

Cutting out processed foods and eating as clean as possible, and making sure you get plenty of exercise (it can even be in the form of walking, you don’t have to necessarily go to the gym) will boost metabolism and help you lose weight – and maintain that weight loss. Sofia seems to have learned this firsthand.
