According to the most recent details on the Internet, the Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro Devices is preparing to update its line of desktop processors with the introduction of its new single-core, AM3-compatible processor. Dubbed Sempron 140, the new CPU model is designed to provide users with support for
DDR3 memory, while its price tag and power specifications make it a noteworthy alternative to other CPU models currently available on the market.

AMD's first socket AM3-ready, single-core Sempron processor, the Sempron 140, will be made available this week, having already surfaced on the websites of several online retailers. The new part is expected to become an alternative for those users looking for a cheap CPU that can provide support for DDR3 memory and an optimum performance level. There are only a few details available at this time, but it looks like the chip will be compatible with the latest AMD platforms on the market.

The new Sempron 140 is manufactured using a 45nm process technology and features a clock speed of 2.7GHz. This has been coupled with 1MB of L2 cache and a TDP level of 45W. It is designed for Socket AM3 platforms and will be coupled with DDR3 memory in some of the upcoming desktop PCs. Although we have no details on the processor's availability date, it is expected to make its way in stores across Europe starting this week.

As far as pricing goes, AMD's upcoming Sempron 140 processor should become available for prices in the range of US$40. This new part will allow users to take advantage of more affordable desktop PCs, providing them with a mix of single-core processing power and fast DDR3 memory. Such systems are likely going to be made available for multimedia enthusiasts.

I love AMD but to be honest this is a really stupid product I don't Understand the point in it at all. I could see somebody buying a 2 core ddr3 proc and using it temporarily and going to 4 as prices drop but a single core sounds like a terrible idea. I am really surprised to see such an awful idea come out of them. hey were on a roll for a bit in the months surrounding the global foundries spin off but this is just stupid. Unless they can show a specific market in terms of a specialized device then this will likely be an epic fail on their part. I know that the economy is bad but single core is a serious downgrade.

Not everybody wants the fastest, greatest and hottest CPUs. I expect processors like Sempron 140 to be an important component of desktop systems powered by trimmed down OS's like the Google Chrome OS. You don't really need a Phenom to browse FaceBook or read your GMail!

Not everybody has to have the latest and greatest. A DDR3 capable processor in the $30 range that can be put into a htpc I think will find a lot of buyers.

because the single core sempys are dual core athlons with a defective core. it makes COMPLETE SENSE for them to sell the damn thing rather than throw it away or salvage the silicon, which might end up earning them less money than simply selling the thing. its not a stupid idea. same concept with their tri-core CPUs, which are defective quads.

for me Amd SEMPRON 140 is the best single core. affordable less power consumption, good in gaming and surfing the internet..
