The time when e-mail spam tries to sell you products or services seems to be over. Now worms are getting involved into politics. This is the case of the new Sober version, called by McAffee, Sober.q.

According to McAffee, this is the 16th variant in the Germany-oriented Sober virus family that
first appeared on the Internet in October 2003. Unlike earlier Sober viruses, this version isn't packaged inside an e-mail attachment.

This isn't the first case of propaganda spam, but this Sober version seems to be the most aggressive.

The authors of this mass-mailing worm are using for distribution a Web site that automatically updates computers infected with the earlier, highly successful "Sober.p" variant, which began spreading on May 2.

The technique used to spread this new version of Sober is very efficient, because the messages were send by innocent-looking computers, and this may be an explanation for the rapid spreading of the virus.

There are 72 variations of the spam, and some of them are in English. The security experts are speculating that the author of this new version of Sober is a Neo-Nazi sympathizer motivated by ideology, and not by the money.
