You know about the so-called 'sitcom curse', don't you? The term applies to a very successful television series, that really pushes the envelope both in terms of the audience it reaches and in
those of money made from it. After said show ends, its stars suddenly find themselves in a sort of limbo, where they can't get a job better than the one that has just ended. In other words, this curse is what happens when one actor becomes typecast or can't surpass the previous work s/he has done.
One of the most cited examples of such a curse is the popular series 'Friends'. After a glorious 10-year run, all the six stars who starred in it are in no way better than they were when they were still shooting for it. Despite their many attempts at making a name for themselves, different from the ones their characters had in 'Friends', their future projects either failed completely or just didn't appeal to the audience.
Courteney Cox Arquette also tried to pursue an acting career and end the Friends curse by producing and starring in her own television show. 'Dirt', described as a closer look into the world of modern tabloids, set out to be like a mirror held in front of the paparazzi agencies and celebrities alike. While its premise was more than interesting, people began to lose interest in the show right from day 2. So, now we reach that which makes the headline of this post: the producers wanted for the first season to end with a bang that would be remembered generations later.
So, they thought: what was the one thing that 'Friends' fans always wanted to see but never got the chance? What was the only thing that we could take from this show and use it on 'Dirt'? Why, if it wasn't a steamy lesbian kiss between Rachel and Monica, I don't know what was! OK, maybe a kiss between Rachel, Monica AND Phoebe...
For two months now, we have been hearing about this kiss and how it would be played and how long it would be and how steamy and so on and so forth. The moment of the kiss came and went and, to our surprise, we realize we might as easily have lived without it. Just so you get the idea of just how lame the whole thing was: I have seen mothers kiss their daughters with more passion and conviction. Also, Aniston's character was exactly like Rachel, so I'm no quite sure where this entire 'breaking the curse' theory fits in anymore.
Below is the clip: watch it and you will see precisely how Jennifer and Courteney managed to destroy one of our most cherished 'Friends' fantasy. Let's thank them for that...
