Today I stumbled upon some great snowflake shots taken by Moscow-based photographer Alexey Kljatov (aka ChaoticMind75). His Flickr profile is filled with gorgeous shots of snowflake crystals of unearthly shapes and sizes.

On his blog, Alexey explains that he uses a custom-made macro system composed of a Helios 44m-5 lens from an old Zenit SLR camera along with a Canon A650. The backdrops for all his images are mostly dark woolen fabrics and sometimes natural light.

I must admit that I can't stop looking at these amazing shots admiring the variety of snowflake crystals, from simple triangular crystals, hollow columns and sectored plates to amazing capped columns and fernlike stellar dendrites.

The entire set has 68 amazing photos featuring all kinds of snowflake crystals. Check out below for a small photo gallery with just a few of the images posted by Alexey on his Flickr page.
