Conservationists are pleased to announce that, with the help of camera traps, they have managed to snap pictures of various animals that currently inhabit Uzbekistan's Gissar Nature Reserve.

Of all the animals that were photographed in said region, the ones that conservationists were most happy to find in the area were snow leopards.

According to Mongabay, wildlife researchers have for some time now been aware of the fact that such big cats inhabit Uzbekistan.

However, it was only towards last year's end that they managed to photograph some of them.

As explained on several occasions, snow leopards are currently considered an endangered species. Thus, conservationists estimate that just 3,000 – 7,000 such felines are left in the wild.

To be able to protect them against poachers, habitat loss, prey decline, and human-wildlife conflict, greenheads must first pin down the areas that they inhabit.

Hence, they have taken a keen interest in carrying out campaigns such as the one in Uzbekistan's Gissar Nature Reserve and use camera traps to gather information about the felines.

“With an improved understanding of [snow leopard] range and numbers we have a better chance to save them,” explains Tom McCarthy with green group Panthera.
