Canonical announces that Snappy Ubuntu Core is now available for the new Raspberry Pi 2 that was released earlier today.

Canonical is already trying to stay ahead of the IoT (Internet of Things) movement and the company managed to have the latest Snappy Ubuntu Core ready just in time of the Raspberry Pi 2. At this point you might be wondering what the Internet of Things is and why Ubuntu is making a move for it.

Today's Internet infrastructure can support a lot more than just computers, smartphones, and tablets. We are surrounded by devices that also have Internet connections and they can be controlled as such, like your fridge or your house climate control. These are just some of the more obvious devices, but the Internet of Things is about the underlying infrastructure that binds all of these together.

Raspberry Pi 2 is a beast

A new Raspberry Pi has been released and it's a lot more powerful than the old one, which would be ideal for a system like Ubuntu. There are already a number of distros that can run on Raspberry Pi 2 and now Ubuntu is one of them.

"Can I use Snappy Ubuntu Core on the Raspberry Pi? is one of the most frequently asked questions we heard since launching Ubuntu Core for smart devices. Thanks to a very successful collaboration between the Raspberry Pi Foundation and Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, we are pleased to announce that Snappy Ubuntu Core is available for the Raspberry Pi 2, the latest Raspberry Pi family member," wrote Canonical on the official blog.

Ubuntu Core is a single identical platform that stretches from the cloud down to the device, and with the advent of IoT (Internet of Things), Canonical needs to be one step ahead of the curve. Having support for Raspberry Pi 2 is just one of those steps.

We covered the launch of Raspberry Pi 2 and we will have a comprehensive review of the platform in a few days.
