John Smedley, the leader of the Sony Online Entertainment team, says that the original Planetside is getting ready to make the switch to a free-to-play structure in the coming months.

He states via Twitter that, “we are making a game free. This also gives us more time to make it f2p. So enjoy starting tmw late morning.”

All those who are playing either the first game or its sequel also have free time to use in the original Planetside, although it might take some time for all users to get access to it.

The game was first launched in 2003 and the new business model will probably be introduced closer to its anniversary.

The free-to-play Planetside 2 has done very well since being launched last year and Sony Online Entertainment is constantly deploying updates and new content for the MMO shooter.
