Smash your way through a beautiful futuristic dimension made of glass

2014 kicked off with a relatively poor lineup of new games for iOS devices, most of which consist of Flappy Bird clones. But one developer decided that a change of scenery was in order.

Mediocre AB today deployed Smash Hit in the iTunes App Store, a stunningly-gorgeous endless game where you travel through an alternate dimension with the task of breaking all the glass elements around you with metal balls.

Featuring realistic physics, this seemingly simple game asks of you to break glass objects as you progress through a series of rooms, not walking, but floating, as if sitting on a moving platform that only goes forward.

You also need to shatter glass obstacles that prevent you from progressing, and ultimately hit a switch at the end of every room to open the door to a new stage, all without stopping for a second.

The experience is truly atmospheric, due to the game’s progression and original sound score, the psychedelic color palette, and the crisp visuals. Play this thing 10 inches away from your iPad’s screen and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped in a parallel universe. Mediocre AB would be smart to make a 3D version of this game to play with Anaglyph 3D glasses.

According to its creators, “This experience requires focus, concentration, and timing to not only travel as far as you can, but also break the beautiful glass objects that stand in your way,” with which I concur.

The game is awfully demanding in terms of reflexes and attention span. Plus, you actually have to anticipate gravity taking its toll on the heavy metal balls, meaning you sometimes have to aim higher to shatter a faraway object.

The music and audio effects change in accordance with the new stage you’ve just entered, and the obstacles themselves seem to be moving to the background music.

Mediocre AB promises to offer “over 50 different rooms with 11 different graphic styles, and realistic glass-breaking mechanics in every stage.” However, I’m not sure the free game offers all that, as I’ve noticed it has an in-app purchase option for a Premium version (for $1.99/€1.79).

Fans of the video game Portal will undoubtedly feel a familiar eeriness crossing from one room to another, and even the game’s sound score sounds like it was taken right out of Valve’s first-person puzzler. That being said, Smash Hit feels as original as original can be. Nothing here is a rip-off (at least to my knowledge).

I confidently recommend that you download Smash Hit on your iDevice of choice and take it for a spin. Play it with headphones for a complete audio-visual experience. There are basically no software/hardware requirements, as developer Mediocre AB says you only need iOS 4.3 to play this one.
