Microsoft is reportedly getting ready to launch its very own smartwatch sometime next year, in an attempt to compete with Apple and other companies preparing similar projects.

Canalys analyst James Wang told CRN that smartwatches were indeed a big opportunity for Microsoft, but the company had to perform better than in the tablet industry.

"Google and Microsoft must execute more successfully than they have done with their tablet platforms and will have to adapt their business models appropriately," he said.

"An effective smartwatch will not just be a second screen for a smartphone. Creating a competent developer platform specifically for the form factor will be an enormous challenge."

Rumor has it that Microsoft’s own smartwatch will come with a new Windows 8 version and a transparent aluminum case that will be not only very durable, but also extremely light.
