Smartphones with fingerprint scanners embedded in the home buttons like the iPhone 6 or Samsung Galaxy S5 (and the Galaxy S6 for that matter) might soon become a thing of the past.

Korean biometric giant CrucialTek has managed to get the approval for one of its patents that outlines an embedded fingerprint sensing technology that can be installed in the display itself, to avoid the big button bezels.

Does it sound familiar? At some point, Samsung was said to be considering a setup like this for its Galaxy Note 4 or Galaxy S5, but the Korean tech giant never got around to actually implementing it.

By the looks of it, Sammy is barely making the transition from the cumbersome swipe-based fingerprint sensor to a touch-based fingerprint sensor that companies like Apple, Meizu and Huawei have already been using in their products.

Still, both systems end up living in the home button. But that might change if CrucialTek has its way.

Fingerprint authentication will soon be achieved via the handset's display

According to Korean Herald, the company plans to implement the under-glass fingerprint scanner into a phone that will arrive in the first half of the year at the latest.

A few days ago we told you the preliminary specs of the upcoming Meizu MX5 leaked into the wild showing us the Chinese company would probably wow us out of our shoes when launching its next flagship.

The whispers claimed that the Meizu MX5 won’t have a fingerprint scanner located in the home key, which leaves plenty of room for speculation. Will it be implemented in the screen instead? Your guess is as good as ours.

CrucialTech has worked in the past with companies like BlackBerry and HTC bringing fingerprint recognition systems to devices like the HTC One Max, but as the tech makers were surpassed by the competition, the biometric guru also saw its business falter.

However, the Korean company is not giving up without a fight and continues to push for innovation. And for their latest biometric trackpad, CrucialTech has pretty big hopes.

We certainly won’t miss the chunky home button on high-end handsets, so bring it on, CrucialTech!
