Compete, a TNS Media company, has recently published the results for its quarterly SmartphoneIntelligence survey, providing a deeper insight into the way consumers are using their iPhones and Smartphones. Based on the results of the survey it seems that smartphone and iPhone owners tend to be on the same side when it comes to their favorite types of applications. Games, music, social networking, entertainment and weather are clearly the most popular applications across platforms.

Compete's Smartphone Intelligence Survey also provides some interesting results on the differences between iPhone, Blackberry and Palm users, such as the fact that 73 percent of Blackberry owners have downloaded or purchased 5 or less apps, while 72 percent of iPhone owners have gone for 10 or more. At the same time, the survey shows that applications priced under $5 appeal to 83 percent of all smartphone owners, while iPhone users tend to purchase those they like.

Social networking sites seem to be one of the most popular types of applications accessed by smartphone users through their mobile devices and Facebook is at the top of the list. The report shows that the site is very popular among iPhone owners, with 71 percent of them accessing it from their handsets. Thirty-seven percent of iPhone owners said that Facebook was one of their top three most used apps, while 18 percent nominated it as the favorite software solution.

Danielle Nohe, director of telecommunications and media for Compete, stated, “With the massive number of applications downloaded to date, the iPhone has taken an early lead in getting owners to adopt application functionality and make popular applications a part of their daily lives. Smartphones are changing the way we live and communicate, and once users are hooked, they're very unlikely to give up their device - that makes mobile the next 'can't miss' opportunity for marketers.”

iPhone users, according to the survey, are twice as likely to use Facebook on their mobile devices, compared to Palm users. Moreover, it seems that iPhone owners are the most active users of mobile social networks, with Facebook, MySpace and Twitter being the most accessed sites from the respondents' mobile devices.

Eighty-five percent of smartphone owners prefer using a computer even if Twitter's mobile popularity is rising rapidly. Accessing Twitter using a mobile device is preferred by 26 percent of the iPhone users, 15 percent of Palm users and only 10 percent of Blackberry users, the research firm notes. In addition, the report shows that 41 percent of mobile phone owners use the Twitter application to stay connected with their friends, 32 percent to stay up to date with events, while 19 percent use it for marketing purposes.
