There are quite a lot of users out there who're quite interested in adding a NAS (network-attached storage) unit to their home networks, but aren't able to do so, simply because the whole configuration process might be a tad too complex for them, and this is exactly the specific category of consumers targeted by the SmartStor ZERO NS2600 solution from PROMISE Technology.

According to the manufacturer, the SmartStor ZERO NS2600 is the world’s first true “Zero Configuration” Network Attached Storage (NAS) and Digital Media Server, as it reduces the whole configuration process to almost zero.

That's possible with the help of the “ON” software management tool, compatible with both Windows and Mac OS X machines, that will automatically open the Network Share on one's desktop every time they power-on the machine, while in the same time creating a desktop alias in Mac OS X and making the Network Share available under My Computer in Windows.

The same application grants users access to a host of additional features made possible by this NAS unit (that, by the way, supports up to 4GB of storage), including DLNA support in order to share content with a variety of entertainment devices such as the XBOX 360, PS3, Samsung DLNA TV, Sony DLNA TV or Windows 7 PC.

“Today consumers are put off by the configuration and management of traditional NAS devices," said Billy Harrison, product manager, CE products for NAS and DAS, PROMISE Technology.

"Consumers want plug and store instant access. The process of creating users, managing permissions, managing shares and enabling/disabling services is a thing of the past. With SmartStor ZERO, we're solving the consumer's most basic problem by delivering to market a DLNA NAS-simple device anyone can use," added Mr. Harrison.

Prices for the SmartStor ZERO NS2600 start at $279.00, with estimated availability being set for Q1, 2011.
