$3000 for a surfboard with some lights embedded in it

After decades of riding waves on boards made of foam and fiberglass, today's surfers have lots of hi-tech alternatives. It's (probably) no wonder that more "coast people" are heading for the beaches even during hot nights.

This is probably not a new wave concept. Here it goes. Because things sometimes go wrong, when they head for the small or big (or no) waves, surfers might run into confused people driving catamarans or boats. Santa Cruz' Light Wave board comes with a (cough) radical approach to...night surfing safety. Their latest board takes out the worry of surfing after dusk, as the Light Wave Surfboard comes with headlights, a rail light, and fin lights to keep you visible whilst having fun with mother Earth's waves.

In addition, the rail light is controlled by a left or right handed dimmer switch, the headlights are activated by lifting the nose, and they can be programmed to run from 10 to 45 seconds at a time. The board is powered by two hopefully waterproof and replaceable batteries that should make you feel safe for a night or two. Well, at least when it comes to boat attacks.

Now, the real bad news is that the lights will also help sharks locate surfers easily. Boat related surf accidents may not be occurring (at night) if you use this, but shark "contacts" will surely increase. You'll have to pay $3000 if you want this board that comes with some lights embedded in it (the lights probably cost $2000). Anyway, pimping surfboards is probably not a very good idea. The sharks might envy you. Better check out the carbon fiber-Kevlar surfboards made by Hydro Epics ($800-$1200).
