This will be the perfect companion on any trip

Trolleys, duffel bags, suitcases, briefcases, they all have their purpose, their roles when their owners go on a trip. However, they are all pretty dumb at the end of the day. Mindless. Not at all capable of doing anything but sit there, and maybe take the abuse of their owners when they try to stuff them beyond capacity.

It's 2015, however, the time frame when many plots of ”futuristic” sci-fi novels, series and films published a few decades ago take place.

That means that everything is getting something electronic, whether people like it or not. When clothes are gaining the ability to display text or recharge phones, luggage can't really do any less, can it?

Especially given how much larger and heavier bags and luggage bags are. They're practically begging for something to be done with all that surface area and thick fabrics. We won't even bother mentioning the possibilities inherent in hard plastic suitcases.

Wanting to be at the forefront of smart luggage, a team of designers put together something they call the Trunkster.

The Trunkster smart luggage bag

The Trunkster is zipperless, for one thing, meaning that it uses a rolltop door, which offers access to the luggage without taking up more space, unlike the flap design.

It's also made of aircraft-grade material and light polycarbonate plastic, meaning that the luggage will last a lot longer than other bags. There is even a sturdier than normal side-to-side handle.

It wouldn't do for the world's first self-proclaimed luggage trolley bag to fall apart during the first plane trip and waste all those neat tech extras.

Speaking of which, Trunkster can be linked to a smartphone and always provide its location via GPS tracking. No one will steal your stuff without you knowing.

There's also a built-in weighing scale which will ensure that you never run into problems when boarding, since you'll not pack beyond the per-bag limit by mistake.

Then there's the integrated battery charger, with a capacity high enough to restore energy to your smartphone more than once (15,000 mAh capacity, for up to nine recharges).

Availability and pricing

Sadly, the Trunkster isn't up for sale yet, and won't be until February, because the thing is still not done with the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. The funding goal has already been reached though. Instead of the $50,000 / €42,000, the team got almost one million if you can believe it.
