Microsoft had recently lowered the Windows 8 screen resolution requirements hinting that smaller devices, be they tablets or laptops, could be unveiled in the coming months, but the company has now confirmed during its earnings conference call that such units are indeed on their way.

Peter Klein, Microsoft’s chief financial officer, confirmed during the call with investors that the Redmond-based tech giant is already working with industry partners to bring smaller Windows 8 devices to the market, without providing any other specifics.

Given the previous reports on the matter, most of these new tablets and notebooks are very likely to run Windows 8.1, the first major overhaul of Windows 8 that’s expected to see daylight this summer.

In addition, Microsoft is also believed to develop its very own 7-inch or 8-inch tablet that could expand the Surface product family and that is believed to arrive on the market later this year.
