One of the main issues with
MMO development is that the game needs to attract a significant number of players so that the community events and certain gameplay mechanics work as they were designed to. Recently, the developers
of the high sea themed MMO
Pirates of the Burning Sea have decided that they need to make some changes regarding the way their servers are distributed to enhance the way their players experience the games.
Because a MMO is a global development, it's hard to have a constant number of players at each moment on each of the servers that distribute the game. People eat and sleep and inevitably there will be more subscribers in some time zones that in others. The problem tends to grow larger as the number of servers of the game grows larger.
Developer Flying Lab has announced that it is reducing the number of game servers for the MMO Pirates of the Burning Sea, from 11 to 4. The result will be a net increase in server population and, perhaps more important, a more cohesive game world. Apparently, the game servers named Bonny, Guadeloupe, Kidd, Morgan, Bellamy, Bonnet and Hornigold (all named in a very pirate fashion) will close down and will only be re-opened if the number of subscribers demands it.
A statement from the developers reads "When you take into account both the disparity in player time zones and the delayed launch of our title in some countries, we were spreading our overall population too thin. Also, in more recent builds, we were able to improve our server technology to allow for an even larger population than we were originally equipped to handle."
The move might lead to some speculation that the MMO Pirates of the Burning Sea is not seeing much success, as player population is so low. Such speculation would be baseless as Flying Lab has not announced a population count and the game is still in its early days, having been launched only in January.
