If you’re having trouble operating the iPhone 6 Plus with one hand, forget about strapping on a case

It’s been said time and time again, but I’ll stress it once more. Just in case you’re still pondering which iPhone 6 model to go for. If you don’t have large hands and rely on one-handed use of your smartphone, the Plus is probably not for you. Especially if you also want to protect it with a case.

When the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus arrived on my desk, I immediately sensed that the larger model would pose problems for those who use their smartphones with one hand.

I’ve come to appreciate the things it does better than its smaller sibling, but I maintain that it’s not suitable for people with small and even normal-sized hands who prefer one-handed use. And it’s an even bigger problem if you want to protect it with a case.

Think twice if you’re the type who buys a case for their new iPhone

After strapping on a two-millimeter thick sleeve, I soon discovered that the few things I was able to do with one hand were no longer possible. At least not without some serious frowning.

The Sleep/Wake button – which is already positioned badly – is even harder to reach when you have a case strapped on. Same goes for the volume buttons and the mute rocker. Just grasping the phone is an ordeal, especially if you get yourself one of those shiny transparent sleeves. Silicone is the best choice if you’re concerned about grip, but it still doesn’t solve the problem of actually operating the software.

You’ll know the difference when it’s gone

When I removed the case from the phone, I felt at peace again. Sure, the iPhone 6 Plus remains big and hard to operate with one hand, but at least I can manage to get a decent experience out of it without flexing every muscle in my body. Testing this theory on females yielded even more conclusive results.

iPhone 6 Plus just doesn’t seem to make good friends with small or even normal-sized hands, both male and (especially) female hands.

A simple thing like a 2mm sleeve is enough to ruin your entire experience. You won’t know this until you’ve tried it, and I won’t ask anyone to take my word for it. Just visit the Apple Store, do a hands-on, and see for yourself. Bottom line, be very careful what model you choose if you care about these things. And this is just scratching the surface.
