People who join a slimming group usually lose 5 times more weight than DIY dieters

Those who for one reason or another are thinking about shaking off a few pounds would do best to join a slimming group, a study recently published by a team of researchers in Houston, Texas suggests.

This is because people who belong to such groups and therefore benefit from social support in their endeavor are bound to lose about five times more weight than those who opt for a DIY diet.

The specialists now claiming that slimming groups might work wonders for those wishing to get back in shape base their statement on data collected while studying two different groups of dieters.

Thus, the people belonging to the first group joined Weight Watchers, while those belonging to the second group attempted losing weight on their own.

In just three months' time, it became obvious that the Weight Watchers dieters were better at dropping the excess pounds than those who chose not to get any external help.

Thus, the first group had managed to lose an average of 8.6lbs (almost 4 kilograms), while the latter had only lost an average of 1.8lbs (roughly 0.8 kilograms), Daily Mail says.

Interestingly enough, information collected after six months revealed that, while the Weight Watchers dieters were continuing to lose weight, some of the DIY dieters had actually managed to put about 5lb (almost 2.3 kilograms) back on.

These differences in weight loss between the two groups of dieters occurred despite the fact that the individuals who gave things a try on their own had been provided with information concerning a healthy food and exercise regimen.

“The difference in weight loss between the two groups is compelling. Whilst people in the Weight Watchers group demonstrated significant weight loss at six months, people in the self-help group started to re-gain weight,” lead researcher Dr. Craig Johnston summed up the findings of this research.

“Over time, it is unlikely that DIY diets are successful,” said specialist concluded.
