High-end CPU coolers may be the ones that get most media attention when they come out, but more unassuming ones still manage to stand out, given the right circumstances, as happened to Gelid's latest invention.
Gelid is one of those companies that specialize in cooling devices for personal computers and other sorts of IT installations.
As it happens, it is the latter sort of products that the newest cooler to leave its labs will service, at least as far as Intel-based machines go.
More specifically, the
new cooler is designed with compatibility for the Sandy Bridge central processing units (LGA1155 sockets), not just Intel's LGA 775 and 1156.
That said, the product itself is of the low profile variety, meaning that it is nowhere near as large as high-end models for gaming systems and the like.
It measures 95 (L) x 93.5 (W) x 28 (H) mm and should be most useful inside HTPCs (home-theater personal computers) and 1U server racks.
Besides those, it should also be compact enough for Mini ITX, Micro ATX, ATX, Panel PC and Car PC systems.
Named Slim Silence i-Plus, is has a copper base and a sintered heatpipe, plus a frameless ball bearing fan with a diameter of 75mm.
Said fan can spin at 1,200 to 2,600 RPM (rotations per minute) and has a sound output of 15 to 27.8 dBA.
”This cooler is the perfect choice for HTPC users who are looking for a 1U sized cooler capable of cooling the latest generation of Intel core i3 and i5 CPUs”, said Gebhard Scherrer co-founder and Sales Director of GELID Solutions Ltd.
The product conforms with the is RoHS and WEEE standards and can cope with TDPs of up to 82W, provided the case has good ventilation. It should already be selling, its price being of $26 in the US and 20 Euro in Europe.
