Sources at Apple’s supply chain partners are telling DigiTimes that Apple has revised its MacBook Pro line to include a slimmer chassis with no optical drive.

By removing the optical disc drive, Apple will release 13- and 15-inch laptops that retain their Pro-status with higher specs than the MacBook Air, the sources said.

Specifically, the enhancements will occur in the CPU and storage departments, according to the Taiwanese trade publication.

Production is said to have already begun, with Apple planning to ship 100,000-150,000 units per month initially, and later 900,000 per month.

This is not the first time DigiTimes reports on Apple’s plans to put the MacBook Pro on a diet by removing the disc-reading unit, which is regarded as an obvious next step for the Mac makers.
