Scout Taylor-Compton,16, the actress who starred in the 2004 film "Sleepover" and is known to TV viewers for her part in "Gilmore Girls" has gone missing from her Southern California home.

According to San Bernardino County Sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Beavers, the teen actress was last seen on August 12 at her home in Apple Valley and was reported missing by her mother.

Compton is likely a runaway who does not want to be found, the police said. Altough a sheriff's deputy has been assigned to the case, the family has also hired a private investigator.

"We sincerely appreciate everyone's attention and concern regarding Scout and are praying for her safe return," her family said in a statement.
"We have faith in the agencies working on the case and are optimistic that the outcome will be positive."

The Web site of the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children described her as white with red hair and hazel eyes, pierced ears and scars on her forehead.
