After months of development, Slackware 14.0 reaches Beta status on July 22nd, as announced by its developer, Patrick Volkerding.

Among lots of interesting features, the Slackware 14.0 Beta operating system comes with the ultimate Xfce 4.10 desktop environment.

It also updates the following packages: PHP 5.4.5, gvfs 1.12.3, GNOME Keyring 3.4.1, Glade3 3.8.1, slackpkg 2.82.0, Gutenprint 5.2.9, Foomatic Filters 4.0.12, udisks2 1.98.0, udev 182, sysvinit-scripts 2.0, and lvm2 2.02.96.

"Howdy! Lots of shiny stuff here, including the long awaited Xfce 4.10! Thanks to Robby Workman for the initial set of build scripts, and lots of testing (plus some very helpful notes about things such as the proper build order)."

"I'm calling this a beta (finally!), and it's really very close to what we expect to release. Test away," the official announcement read.

Yes - kde is still a primary DE in slackware. The fuss about XFCE was due to all the library changes had broken XFCE and now it all works again. Unlike a lot of other distro's, Slackware has multiple Desktop Environments available to it - with that said, Gnome is still not officially part of Slackware but can be installed using one of several 3rd party options.

KDE is still there. I suspect, with Pat V. liking it so much, it will be there for some time. XFCE, however, is quite popular, and the XFCE announcement is just for an uppdate.
