Slacko Puppy, a distribution built from Slackware 14.0 binary TXZ packages, featuring binary compatibility with Slackware and access to the Slackware, Salix, and Slacky package repositories, is now at version 5.7 and is ready for download.

Slacko Puppy is a rather interesting release that makes use of the Slackware repositories, even if it seems to have nothing to do with that particular Linux distribution.

Slacko has been around for a long time, and the developer has integrated a lot of features until now, but some of you might notice that the Linux distribution hasn't changed all that much over time.

On the other hand, the developer of Slacko Puppy 5.7 had to make some adjustments because Puppy is no longer being made by Barry Kauler, which means that the entire system had to be altered.

“Slacko 5.7 is the first Puppy built from the woof-CE build system, forked from Barry Kauler's Woof late last year after he announced his reirement from Puppy development. It is the natural progression of Slacko 5.6 with the added features introduced to woof-CE,” reads the announcement.

According to the changelog, a new “First Run” GUI has been added with bugfixes and visual enhancements, ensuring that new users have a much better experience when running the distribution for the first time.

The “Welcome” screen also received a number of improvements, Linux kernel 3.4.82 and 3.10.32 have been implemented (both of which are LTS versions), the kernels have been patched or already built with f2fs support, and a lot of Icon and Graphical User Interface improvements have been implemented through the entire system.

Also, users with powerful NVIDIA or AMD graphics cards should find that Slacko 5.7 comes with proprietary driver support. The developer says that proprietary video driver upgrades are available for Nvidia and AMD/ATI graphics for new and legacy cards. This means that the default version is Nouveau and that the new drivers are available in the repositories.

Other changes include FFMpeg 2.0 and a number of supporting programs, like Pmusic and Mplayer. The Joe's Window Manager (JWM) has been updated and the tools that are used to configure JWM have also received a few updates of their own.

A complete list of changes can be found in the official announcement. Download Slacko Puppy 5.7 right now from Softpedia. Just like Puppy, Slacko 5.7 is a very small distribution and is recommended for users who are looking for a light, yet powerful OS.
