Slackel Openbox 6.0 Live, a distribution based on Slackware and Salix that uses the Salix tools and packages, has been released and is now available for download.

Slackel Openbox Live is based on Openbox, which is a very light and configurable window manager, and even if it’s not a fully operational desktop environment, you won’t find any lighter solutions out there.

The developers of Slackel Openbox Live have based their project on Linux kernel 3.10.30, which is not exactly one of the most recent ones available. It is a long-term release though, which means that it will continue to receive more updates in the future. The only problem is that the distribution might have some problems running on the latest hardware released and users will not have access to the most recent features in the newer kernels.

“There are several live modes to choose from, such as graphical mode, persistent mode, without ACPI, without SWAP, or text mode. Supported languages include English (default), Spanish, French, Italian, Greek, Czech, Dansk, German, Japanese, Hungarian, Polish, Dutch, and Portuguese.”

“As mentioned, the graphical session is powered by the lightweight and minimal Openbox window manager, which is comprised of a single, transparent panel located on the bottom edge of the screen. From this bottom taskbar, users can easily and quickly access the main menu, launch applications, interact with running programs and the system tray area, as well as to switch between virtual workspaces,” reads the official announcement.

The developers also implemented a number of default applications. For example, Exaile is now the audio player, ISO Master CD/DVD is used for image creation and editing, Whaaw! media player has been added, Asunder Audio-CD ripper is available for MP3 encoding, and more.

Also, Geany IDE has been added, the Viewnior image viewer is the default application for images, Claws Mail email client has been added, Gparted is provided by default, gFTP file transfer utility has been added, and Midori is now the default web browser.

All Slackel distributions are based on Slackware and Salix, but the developers are making their own personal blend. Slackel is also called the Hellenic Linux Distribution due to the fact that it's built in Greece.

Slackel Openbox 6.0 was developed for the 32-bit and 64-bit architectures and the images can be easily burned on a CD or can be used from a regular USB stick.
