Bethesda has just published a brand new update on the performance of its The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim role playing game, confirming it’s shipped over 10 million units across the world and that the game is now the fastest selling title ever to be released on the Steam digital distribution network.

Skyrim has been enjoyed by millions of people from all around the world on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, even if it had quite a lot of glitches and its subsequent patches haven’t exactly stopped many of them, sometimes even creating new problems altogether.

Still, the company has now confirmed that over 10 million copies have been shipped around the world across all three platforms.

"Large retail reorders across all platforms and record-breaking digital sales reflect the ongoing global demand by consumers excited to explore this extraordinary fantasy epic," the company said in a statement, via Industry Gamers.

The developer, together with its parent company, ZeniMax Media, expects to see a stream of steady sales, once downloadable content will be released, alongside the special Creation Kit to allow for better mods to appear.

“We are gratified that Skyrim continues to garner high review scores and accolades around the world,” said Robert Altman, Chairman and CEO of ZeniMax Media. “We are most grateful to our fans for their support and enthusiasm for the game, and their love of the hundreds of hours of gameplay it offers. We continue to strive to deliver the highest quality entertainment experience for everyone. 2012 will be another huge year for our fans, with the release of the Creation Kit, as well as exciting DLC which will add to the richness of this epic adventure."

What’s more, Valve also mentioned that Skyrim became the fastest selling game ever to be released on its Steam digital distribution service.

“Skyrim is the fastest selling title in Steam's history,” said Jason Holtman, Director of Business Development at Valve Corporation. “Bethesda’s commitment to and understanding of the PC as a gaming platform shows in the great review scores, spectacular launch, and continued high player numbers that Skyrim has received. We are delighted that Bethesda chose to use Steamworks to support Skyrim both at retail and digitally.”

Skyrim is now reaping the rewards of its high quality, managing to win a variety of distinctions, including the Game of the Year one from the 2011 Spike TV Video Game Awards.
