- Skyrim is still plagued by crashes on PC |
|
Bethesda released a brand new patch for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on the PC yesterday, taking it to version 1.3, finally resolving some of the serious issues that appeared after the previous update, 1.2, was released last week.
Sadly, while quite a lot of glitches and problems were resolved by the new patch, the game still crashes quite frequently, as lots of Skyrim owners shared their problems with us and with Bethesda on the game’s forums. It seems that there’s no pattern to these game errors, as no matter where the players were in its virtual world or what quests they wanted to pursue, the Skyrim always crashed to their desktop or, worse, resulted in a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) system error that forces users to restart their computer. Bethesda has yet to comment on these frequent crashes, but we might expect a new patch, or at least a small hotfix, to appear sometime next week, after update 1.3 is released on consoles like the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. Until then, how has your Skyrim experience go after patch 1.3 on the PC? Share your thoughts below.

| Comment #1 by: Frustrated Friar on 08 Dec 2011, 14:06 UTC | reply to this comment | I can no longer enter new areas without the game immediately crashes to desktop. "Enter new area" is interpreted as "Quit to desktop". |
| Comment #1.1 by: Mylespol on 10 Dec 2011, 03:31 GMT | the same thing is happing to me the large address thing helps a little but not a lot and it makes loading screens take up to 7 min |
| Comment #1.2 by: nik_d on 11 Dec 2011, 05:09 GMT | happening to me too.. game crashes more frequently on loading screen nw after update 1.3... :-( |
| Comment #1.3 by: Sidharth on 10 Jan 2012, 08:07 GMT | Just overclock your graphics card and set all setting of your graphics card to highest possible and in game graphics to suit your graphics card. It'll do and if not then switch back to v1.1 and do the same. |
| Comment #2 by: Mike on 08 Dec 2011, 14:35 UTC | reply to this comment | I guess I'm not the only one getting blue screens of death after 1.3 |
| Comment #3 by: revrai on 08 Dec 2011, 15:39 UTC | reply to this comment | It seems stable though.. no crashes/BSoDs for me. |
| Comment #4 by: LK on 08 Dec 2011, 17:03 UTC | reply to this comment | I can play about 5 minutes before the audio starts to go static/buzzing then get BSOD. Interesting thing is that I always get the audio glitch as a precursor to the crash. Dunno if this started with 1.2 but know that 1.3 did not fix. |
| Comment #5 by: 27 on 08 Dec 2011, 18:16 UTC | reply to this comment | same issues. even tried complete reinstalls, switching pcie lanes etc. no bueno. |
| Comment #6 by: Assassin on 08 Dec 2011, 18:40 UTC | reply to this comment | No problems before 1.3 but after the update i have CtDs every time. |
| Comment #6.1 by: Draekros on 09 Dec 2011, 03:37 GMT | I'm noticing the same effect as most of the others. I can play for a while but then "Poof!" back at the desktop. At least I'm not getting BSODs. I think v1.3 broke something :S. |
| Comment #7 by: Flickdraw on 08 Dec 2011, 22:38 UTC | reply to this comment | Played last night for a good 3-4 hours with no crashes or freezing. 10 minutes after updating I freeze. Seems 1.3 has totally fudged this game. They need to bring out a rollback system to get pc users back to the times when it actually worked. |
| Comment #7.1 by: Fullster on 12 Dec 2011, 04:11 GMT | I agree, I would prefer to play on 1.2 so that I can actually play the game. 1-15 minutes freezes and i have to restart. |
| Comment #8 by: Phil on 09 Dec 2011, 08:30 UTC | reply to this comment | The game has generally been very stable for me, the only time I've had a crash was when I tried out the Catalyst 11.11b drivers a couple of weeks ago. I've played the 1.3 patch for several hours with no crashes. |
| Comment #9 by: someone on 09 Dec 2011, 10:33 UTC | reply to this comment | i dont get these crashes with all you people... my game also used to crashed when i began playing and quickly i set my antialiasing from 8x to 4x and it never crashed again.... hope this can help anyone out there! or try lowering your other settings! :-) |
| Comment #10 by: someone on 09 Dec 2011, 10:35 UTC | reply to this comment | also i had lots of sound problems with CREATIVE sound cards... playing with the ati hdmi sound source now and everything sounds perfect! |
| Comment #11 by: Sonny on 09 Dec 2011, 13:57 UTC | reply to this comment | On PC dragons still flying doing space walk, major crashes, MAJOR LAG, spells now suck big time..they do nothing, graphics suck now, audio sucks now, and more. |
| Comment #12 by: TGS on 09 Dec 2011, 23:01 UTC | reply to this comment | My god, what * did Beth do...the more patch..the more instable it becomes. After 1st install all was fine, with pacth 1.2 crashe sto desktop and now with 1.3 game freeze. |
| Comment #13 by: some guy on 10 Dec 2011, 00:01 UTC | reply to this comment | entering my riften house = game crash... moments later i can't even go to the college of winterhold... by any chance is the crashing just growing to block out my whole game... |
| Comment #14 by: Zeitgurf on 10 Dec 2011, 02:39 UTC | reply to this comment | I have yet to encounter any major bugs for 1.3. Though there was a dragon in Treva's keep that is flying as high as a plane, I can't even reach that dragon with my bow and arrow :\ Won't want to fight. I was able to fight a dragon nicely on Western Watchtower though(not the Mirmulnir one) |
| Comment #15 by: CH on 10 Dec 2011, 05:26 UTC | reply to this comment | Game ran wonderfully with 1.2! I read the fixes for 1.3 and was pretty excited for it to come out. Then I got it and I really wish I would of turned off the auto updating for the game because 1.3 nearly ruins its. Where it crashes is completely random, there is no pattern that I am noticing with them. I find it amazing that a studio such as Bethesda, which has been around for quite a long time now, STILL cannot make a reliable game engine. |
| Comment #16 by: FalconOI on 10 Dec 2011, 09:50 UTC | reply to this comment | Fallen inlove with Skyrim in everyway ;) but these crashes to the desktop is srsly making me rethink what I thought of Bethesda. With Modders making improvements on the game already, mabye they should be hiring some of the modding crowd, seeing as they're the ones who know how to do things and do things right. |
| Comment #17 by: cassbob on 10 Dec 2011, 15:44 UTC | reply to this comment | The game crash to desktop(sometimes i must reboot os) after 5 min since the 1.3 patch, and the mouse lag comme back...the game became unplayable. |
| Comment #18 by: One of these days... on 11 Dec 2011, 01:37 UTC | reply to this comment | Ha, you guys are lucky that you have gotten to play the game! I have had the game since its' release and still cannot play it (yes I have tried all the known fixes plus hundreds of others). |
| Comment #19 by: austen on 11 Dec 2011, 23:39 UTC | reply to this comment | The only area where the crashing is a big issue is during the college of winterhold quest "Hitting the Books". Every time I try to enter the main level of the fort (either through the front or the tunnels below) it loads a little, then crashes. This didn't happen until v1.3. Hope they fix it in v1.4.Otherwise, I can't continue with the college of winterhold quest. |
| Comment #19.1 by: hokansons on 13 Dec 2011, 09:09 GMT | I have the same problem as you. Let me know if you find a fix. I tried reinstalling but same thing (crash to desktop when trying to enter fellglow keep) this SUCKS! |
| Comment #19.2 by: Idodots on 14 Dec 2011, 17:15 GMT | I have the same problem, I just used a console command to advance my way through to the end of the quest. Not ideal but what else can you do? |
| Comment #20 by: anom on 12 Dec 2011, 01:49 UTC | reply to this comment | Its a awsome game... but I refuse to play it until this crash issue is resolved. |
| Comment #21 by: Dyne on 12 Dec 2011, 20:42 UTC | reply to this comment | can no loner store items into any container in the game. im sitting on 300 lbs of dragon bone... |
| Comment #22 by: naldarn on 13 Dec 2011, 15:06 UTC | reply to this comment | Patch 1.3 really increased the crashes to desktop for me, is there a way to roll back to 1.2? |
| Comment #23 by: MrBanane on 14 Dec 2011, 07:20 UTC | reply to this comment | My experience with skyrim after 1.3? It went like like s**t.... I can't fast travel because I keep crashing otherwise, and even just walking doing things, after 5min, sometimes even less, BANG, back to desktop... At least before 1.3 I could fast travel, play for like a 1h or 2 before crashing. Seriously Bethesda are a bunch of lazy * . Between that and the infamous state the ps3 version is in, I can't believe they still get free passes from players like that. They even won vga's game of the year, WHAT THE F**K. |
| Comment #24 by: austen on 15 Dec 2011, 01:49 UTC | reply to this comment | Well, they didn't come out with a patch today, as they usually do on Wednesday. Which means they must be getting their act together and taking the time to polish v1.4. |
| Comment #25 by: jmill on 16 Dec 2011, 18:15 UTC | reply to this comment | For me it's new areas are 50/50 crash rate and if I try to swing my sword at something or get attacked by something it crashes. Defending myself with magic instead is about at 20/80 crash ratio. I can't play without it crashing five minutes in. BETHESDA MAKE A GAME PATCH THAT FIXES PROBLEMS NOT MAKES NEW ONES! |
| Comment #27 by: Frede on 18 Dec 2011, 15:19 UTC | reply to this comment | Crashes to desktop is nerly always by autoshave on my pc I had the same problem playing Oblivion |
| Comment #28 by: skullboy on 19 Dec 2011, 01:36 UTC | reply to this comment | When will developers understand that true hardcore gamers spend a grip load of money to play games on elite rigs? I will NOT push buttons on a controller to make a combo punch. I want to rip into a game that can challenge the 900 to 3Grand We spend on a REAL gameing machine. At $60.00 bucks a game compared to the money we put in to build the best. Produce something we want MORE of. Games should not have patch after patch after....patch. |
| Comment #29 by: austen on 19 Dec 2011, 01:43 UTC | reply to this comment | Well, Skyrim on the PC is buggy. But, the console commands makes up for it. Easily work around... well, darn near every quest stopping bug. Plus, it allows for more character concepts "like a god concept, with god mode and all". |
| Comment #30 by: Nord warrior on 20 Dec 2011, 02:31 UTC | reply to this comment | I have a brand new rig with an MSI lightning 6970. This rig can stand up to BF3 ultra settings for hours on end, but can't make it through the intro/character creation on Skyrim without crashing. Makes me really glad I pre-ordered it. I specifically went with the AMD card because the last Fallout games and Oblivion ran better on the AMD gpu.
I know Bethesda games have been a little buggy and had rough launches in the past, but this is really disappointing. |
| Comment #31 by: fred wildebeast on 20 Dec 2011, 19:28 UTC | reply to this comment | Anybody know if the helm of winterhold/Companions bug is fixed? I cannot use the god mode console command sine I killed all of the silverhands to get the helm of winterhold. The companions people are stuck in the "Just got attacked by the silverhands" for the past month... bug fix to move beyond this? |
| Comment #32 by: disappointed on 24 Dec 2011, 06:16 UTC | reply to this comment | I had no issues after 1.3, until they slipped in the laa update. Now I can't play the game for more than an hour before it crashes, where before I was happily grinding along for 8 hours or more sometimes. I was using the 4g mod, which no longer works thanks to the 1.3.1 update. Sadly, I think I'm going to have to shelf this atrocity until such time as professional coders work on it, like certain people in the mod community. I've read too much information about how they forgot PC's were being used to play this game to think they know what they are doing. At least I didn't buy the Collectors Edition and save that coin, although at least the statue looked to be fully functional at least. |
| Comment #33 by: austen on 24 Dec 2011, 21:32 UTC | reply to this comment | I still think Skyrim is better than Oblivion. I love how you can be a dragon (via console). The crashibg thing I got use to on the console version of Oblivion. |
| Comment #34 by: Abstractghost on 28 Dec 2011, 19:59 UTC | reply to this comment | running 1.3, seems like the beast blood no longer prevents diseases? thats frustrating... whats the point of it now?? |

| Comment #36 by: Hunting †wilight on 30 Dec 2011, 11:39 UTC | reply to this comment | This stupid game makes me maaaaaaaaad !!!!!! My lvl is 36 and now this game has started to crash and restart my computer although its configuration is alot above what is needed to run this game ... :-S |
| Comment #37 by: PatchThisNonsense on 31 Dec 2011, 13:40 UTC | reply to this comment | I've got the same problem, can't fix it no matter what tricks I apply. Very annoying aspect to an otherwise great game. |
| Comment #38 by: MS The Third on 01 Jan 2012, 07:33 UTC | reply to this comment | It seems like Im experiencing more frequent crashes with this new crash than I had with the old one :/ |
| Comment #39 by: iye on 08 Jan 2012, 11:04 UTC | reply to this comment | completely unplayable, im using skse mem info to check the mem usage and its not even maxxing out on memory so the issue isnt the 4gb thang... |
| Comment #40 by: schwendemann on 08 Jan 2012, 16:34 UTC | reply to this comment | this is the worst game EVER,all I do now is crash to desktop can not play |
| Comment #41 by: Sidharth on 10 Jan 2012, 08:01 UTC | reply to this comment | my game crashes only sometimes and i have got ati radeon hd 4650 ddr2.i have set all the setting to high except virtual refresh.(A.Aliasing-16x(wide tent),antistropic filtering-16x,catalyst ai-advanced,mipmap - quality) |
| Comment #42 by: Sidharth on 10 Jan 2012, 08:03 UTC | reply to this comment | When i decrease my graphics (not overclocked and optimum quality) then my game starts crashing. So overclock your graphics cards and set all the setting of your graphics card to highest possible and adjust graphics in skyrim as it suits you. |
| Comment #43 by: Bulbous on 11 Jan 2012, 15:36 UTC | reply to this comment | I've got 350 hours played, and about 3 crashes to desktop. I doubt it's the game's fault. |
| Comment #44 by: Magpie on 12 Jan 2012, 00:25 UTC | reply to this comment | I've been playing Skyrim on PC and until recently this game was one of, if not the most stable game I own. Now it's becoming increasingly impossible to travel anywhere without constantly experiencing CTDs or, far more rarely but no less annoying, freezes. This has resulted in some areas like Understone Keep completely off limits. All this started after patch 1.3 and around the same time that my character had increased beyond level 50 and my save game files had passed 16,000 KB. I've managed to reach level 57 since but playing through the last few level-ups has become increasingly frustrating and fast travelling can only get me so far before I actually have to walk somewhere or enter a doorway and then I'm suddenly looking at my desktop. "Aww what...?! Sigh "Not again!" |
| Comment #45 by: Beldar on 12 Jan 2012, 08:08 UTC | reply to this comment | I need help.... Just built a really nice PC last weekend, picked up Skyrim and can't do anything up to Character Creation... GeForce GTX 560 Ti, 8GB Ram, 7200 RPM Hard Drive, even a water cooling kit for my case and a 750 watt power supply. I have the new beta drivers from Nvidia. I have also tried the sound fix and that didn't work. Scaled back even though I shouldn't have to and those tests didn't work out. I have no mods for the game, I am LOST and I hate it. I want to place this wonderful game. I also during the character creation get some kind of blue type of thing in the corner that says test. I am also running Windows 7 64 bit... Any help please!!!!!! Battlefield 3 runs smooth on ultra FYI. |
| Comment #45.1 by: dsweepa on 14 Jan 2012, 22:37 GMT | Remove the beta drivers and put the regular reccomended drivers in. If you decide to update after that use your Nvidia consol or the device manager to do so...Beta is not always right for all systems..they are test drivers |
| Comment #46 by: CaettX on 13 Jan 2012, 14:58 UTC | reply to this comment | I stopped playing it. Can't load my save files. It will work for a bit on a new character, but who wants to do the same thing over and over.... Waiting for fix. |
| Comment #47 by: dsweepa on 14 Jan 2012, 22:29 UTC | reply to this comment | It just plain stinks to pay for a game and have so much restriction to play because of crashes. I cant even enter Fellglow Keep with out crash to desktop. And I ran all the way to boss in Reachwater Rock just to have it shut down again. I love the gameplay but they have to fix the many bugd so I can enjoy it..almost ready to quit |
| Comment #48 by: magusat999 on 15 Jan 2012, 19:43 UTC | reply to this comment | Like many others I upgraded to the 1.3.10 patch, AND have reached 264 hours, level 44 on Skyrim - cannot continue play because of CTD when making any transition (going into dungeons, through doors, to another area when outside...). I had very little problems until all of a sudden this started happening. As a result, Skyrim is just sitting there on my hard-drive with me waiting for a patch, which probably be a long time if they release fixes the same as they did for Fallout NV (approx. 9 months!!!).
I wish this issue would get more media attention - because it isn't getting any Bethsoft attention... |
| Comment #49 by: imzo on 16 Jan 2012, 16:01 UTC | reply to this comment | Ive been playing Skyrim (PC version) happily for over 3 weeks using the original version the game came with - and while there have been some issues - i havnt had anything that has stopped me from playing...
That is until i just updated to 1.3... now the game crashes to desktop within 2 seconds after loading a saved game, i does it every time - now i cannot play Skyrim... |
| Comment #50 by: azza on 16 Jan 2012, 18:17 UTC | reply to this comment | still cant play this stinking game since day one...keeps freezing then crashing to a white screen, time for a refund...i have had enough |
| Comment #51 by: Nomad on 18 Jan 2012, 22:21 UTC | reply to this comment | When I try to log into the Steam support site, I keep getting an invalid user/password error. I have already verified the account name with them. I'm trying to ask a question about the latest Skyrim for PC patch. This is VERY frustrating!! |
| Comment #52 by: David on 18 Jan 2012, 23:39 UTC | reply to this comment | Ive never had a problem with the game , Its always ran great |
| Comment #52.1 by: Malt on 26 Jan 2012, 00:07 GMT | It seems to me it has something to do with the save files becoming larger as we play, everyone with this problem have alot of hours playtime..ive noticed that my older saves are half as large as my recent saves ..i crash at understone keep every time i try to enter.. i installed the game on my desktop with a 9800GT and transferred my save files from my laptop.. and i get the same crashes.. seems to be save files doing it were as my older and smaller save files allow me to go anywhere without crashes |
| Comment #53 by: Lenicus on 26 Jan 2012, 04:04 UTC | reply to this comment | I was having problem where my computer was not only locking up during game but restarting on its own out of no where. I downloaded patch and the lock ups and crashes lessened but still happen just not as frequently. I ran Asus PC Diag tool from my mb manufacturer and all hardware checks out good under stress test. Also ran windows troubleshooter and all system files check out good. Ran norton antivirus and no virus or issues found. Seems this is just in the game design itself. |
| Comment #54 by: Valorius on 07 Feb 2012, 08:21 UTC | reply to this comment | I just got finished the first fight with Alduin at The Throat Of The World and was sent by Parthunaax to talk to the Jarl of Whiterun, imagine my frustration upon trying to enter Dragonsreach and crashing to my Desktop again & again etc, etc. Brings new meaning to the phrase "no, not like this" ... |
| Comment #55 by: Annessa on 11 Feb 2012, 01:24 UTC | reply to this comment | 2 blue screens, one while trying to load a save file, one while zoning into jorravaskr on PC first one was because i got casually one-shotted by a giant. lol. |
| Comment #56 by: Ulfgar on 18 Feb 2012, 03:56 UTC | reply to this comment | these crashes are becoming even worse; currently i am stuck in my house in whiterun. as soon as i try to leave my house the game closes, this needs to be fixed ASAP |
| Comment #56.1 by: wardropper on 22 Feb 2012, 00:33 GMT | Yep. Happens to me all the time now. I'm on level 53, and have completed all the quests and a lot of Misc. ones too. Now I can't even go near Honeybrew Meadery and a whole lot of other places without crashing. Suddenly, the game is unplayable, and it started so well... |
| Comment #57 by: skyrims makin me mad on 18 Feb 2012, 04:53 UTC | reply to this comment | when i load skyrim every thing loads okay but then i cant run or fight or jump or really anything but stand there i cant even open the exit menu |
| Comment #58 by: ChristaToTheMax on 02 Mar 2012, 15:01 UTC | reply to this comment | I never had problems before this patch, now I can't enter into half the cities without the game crashing. It's quite disheartening. I've read a million comments on various websites about this - and it seems to me that it's happening to EVERYONE. I've tried every suggestion out there for fixing it. . . there's absolutely nothing that worked. |
| Comment #59 by: ewadsada on 21 Mar 2012, 15:31 UTC | reply to this comment | GAMES COMPANIES: IGNORE PEOPLE WHO WHINE ABOUT GAME PROBLEMS, BECAUSE WHEN YOU FIX IT FOR THEM, YOU BREAK IT FOR THE 99% OF PEOPLE WHO DON'T WHINE. ACCEPT NOT EVERYONE WILL BE HAPPY. BUT YOU CAN AT LEAST BE CONFIDENT IN YOUR FIRST RELEASE, AND NOT BE BITCHED BY THE COMMUNITY AND RUIN THE GAME WITH POOR PATCHING. |
| Comment #60 by: greg on 23 Mar 2012, 07:38 UTC | reply to this comment | emailed bethesda still waiting for response ,this game is unplayable and a waste of money I have wasted ten hours still game runs for only 3 minutes |
| Comment #61 by: Murdaigean on 25 Mar 2012, 03:06 UTC | reply to this comment | Crashes every few minutes with a forced auto reboot. wasn't doing this when the game first was released. This started about a month or two into it. Hundreds of people are affected and I've totally quit playing the game until they fix it. | |
