Skyrim Diary - The Love/Hate Relationship with Lydia

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been out for almost a week and I've spent quite a lot of hours with the massive role playing game created by Bethesda doing all sorts of things, from fighting with swords or magic to crafting potions, creating or improving my own weapons and armor, or just reading the hundreds of books spread out in the virtual world of Skyrim.

While I'm pretty much falling in love with the game through my own way, Skyrim does manage to annoy me with certain aspects, like the clunky character creator which I detailed last week.

Now, it's time I talked about Lydia, one of the first companions (followers, according to the game) to which you have access.

While I had already gotten used to the companions form past Bethesda games, like Fallout 3 (Fawkes!) or New Vegas (Boone and ED-E!), Lydia is definitely a peculiar woman that has both advantages and disadvantages.

You get Lydia as a follower after you defeat your first dragon in Whiterun, as she is dispatched by the Jarl of the city to be your Housecarl and basically help and protect you in whatever situation you may find yourself in.

Seeing as how my character was a mix between a mage and a warrior, I found Lydia to be quite useful as a tank to distract enemies. After giving her heavy armor and powerful weapons, Lydia became a force to be reckoned with, especially since she only dies when attacked by an impressive number of enemies.

What's more, her pretty big inventory allowed me to practically use her as a pack mule in long dungeons filled with all sorts of precious loot.

Sadly, while I can even say that I've grown fond of Lydia, her glitchy behavior, in trademark Bethesda style, sometimes makes me want to kill her myself.

I've lost count of the times she stood in front of a door I was supposed to go through and wouldn't budge out of my way no matter how much I pushed into her character. I've also lost count of the stealth attacks she foiled because she ran straight towards an enemy that I could have taken down by myself.

Also, after some battles where she sustained quite a bit of damage, she started crawling around but didn't stop not even after her health was restored. Thankfully a fast travel travel to another location got Lydia back on her feet.

Even with this buggy behavior, after seeing that she somehow died after completing a pretty long dungeon, I reverted to a previous save game just to have her (and her big inventory) at my side.

I had Lydia as a companion for a while. I took her on a quest that involved killing quite a few 'Thamlor' guards and after killing a few, gave her a Thalmor helmet to wear.

In the middle of a long ardous battle I had lost track of Lydia, after turning a corner I was rushed by what I thought was about 5 Thalmor guards. However it turned out it was 4 Thalmor guards and Lydia in her Thalmor helmet. I killed her.

Needless to say, this was how I found out Lydia could die. RIP Lydia.

I can't get Lydia to use and wear what I want her to. Anyone else having this problem? Like I want her to use her bow but she just switches to her fists instead.

Agreed on all counts. Something that bugs me (and I know it's not a glitch, it's just reeeeaally grating after the first couple times) is the fact that every time I give her something she gives me that 'tude "*sigh* I am sworn to carry your burdens!" I've taken to calling her by the b-word. "Where's the b**** now?! Oh she died.... * it b****" haha it amused me greatly!

She only wears it if it better rating then what she has equipped by default, which you can't actually take from her. But she does have default layout of heavy armor.

meee too .. she is suposed to be my servent yet she acts like she has a problem with carrying a few things

I love lydia. She rocks, but when she holds me up chasing rabbits in circles with her elven war hammer when she should be following me somewhere I refer to her at affectionately as "Lydiot". I've gotten use to her foiling my stealth kills, so sometimes I just make her wait somewhere. She kicks some serious * in a scrape though.

Comment #3.2 by: Zapis Batran on 25 Nov 2011, 08:39 GMT

maybe she hates you.. did you perchance give her way too much of "your burdens" to carry?

yea i must say lydia is probably one of the good yet glitchy characters in the game. although she is not as good as Uthgerd the Unbroken as a follower Lydia is no dbt the sexiest charecter in skyrim : )

go to riften find a priest (forgot his name)and he will perform the ceremony the next day, also use your head if she dies in combat just go back to a saved game and play it again this time make sure you tell her to" wait"at a point way back out of the combat zone.

I also fell in love with her and married her. The smooth HD texture add-on makes her even more beautiful. She's tough, gorgeous, and becomes a travelling merchant when you mary her. She's a lot like my real wife: beautiful, Rambo tough, shops and sells, then makes me a great home cooked meal!

Comment #5.1 by: Zapis Batran on 30 Nov 2011, 16:06 GMT

She seems to ignore my amulet of Mara even though most female NPCs are currently all over me. I must have given her the chills (icy storm) a bit to often, I spose.

Anyway, I'm now trying to marry into royalty (Elisif the Fair) :D

If that doesn't work out, Mjoll is a good second choice (and willing).

Comment #5.2 by: Aletheion on 02 Dec 2011, 12:05 GMT

Even though she's listed as an option for marriage, I had to add her to the marriage faction via the command line to get her to marry me. I've got her some hot new plate mail armor and a circlet. She looks like a hot hippie warrior... awesome!!

It's amazing how much Lydia behaves if you TALK to her. Click on her, open the dialogue and ask her to move or "wait" or "attack".

I've found her quite the partner when I treat her with a little courtesy, respect and forceful commands delivered at the tip of a Flawless Dwarven Greatsword.

When I went to Solitude and started the Thalmor Embassy quest. Just before I gave Delphine all my * so I could sneak into the embassy, Lydia disapeared. Since then i have not seen hear in Whirun, Dragon's Reach, or my house.

How can I get Lydia to marry me? I tried slaying dragons, threw my voice, got her into the monastary, nothing seems to work. So far all I got for proposals was that dippy merchant going on about the stupid claw I got for her and that other merchant from Whiterun and some woodcutter that wants me to kill bears.

Now, I won't say that Lydia is beautiful. And she has a propensity of being an encuberence in a dungeon but demographically she would be a sensible choice for a wife. And my wife agrees with me.
Besides, I swatted her * with an axe a few hundred times to increase my sneak skills. I owe her something I guess.

She's bugged, on the PC at least. You can marry her via console. In the files, apparently, it's shown that she's meant to be in the marriage faction. There are also mods out these days for the console. I think that, for the 360, you can do it, but you need the PC version to fix bugs and use mods.
