Skyrim Developer Still Not Interested in Making a Multiplayer Game or an MMO

Bethesda wants single-player games

Bethesda still isn’t convinced that it should make a massively multiplayer online game, largely because it’s now focusing on the recently released Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim role playing game, trying to support it with new updates and thinking about any possible DLC for it.

Bethesda has made a name for itself with its huge role playing games, including Fallout 3 or Skyrim, so many industry insiders think it’s just a matter of time before we get to see an online game based on such franchises, much like how Blizzard did with its Warcraft series, or what BioWare is doing with Star Wars: The Old republic, or at least a multiplayer mode inside the next project.

According to Bethesda’s Todd Howard, however, he and his team aren’t convinced about the reasoning behind such a project, saying that, at least for the moment, the whole studio wants to continue forging huge single-player experiences, instead of just trying to turn them into online experiences.

"You can never say never to anything like that," Howard admitted to Joystiq when being asked about the possibility of seeing multiplayer in a game like Skyrim, "but it's not what our focus is. This type of game is where our hearts are, what we get excited about, and that's what we want to focus on. We don't want to lose that focus and we never want to sacrifice anything in the singleplayer game just to have it be multiplayer."

While this decision may not make the most money for Bethesda or Zenimax, its parent company, it’s still great to hear that a developer is willing to stand by its creation and not throw in tacked-on multiplayer modes or online experiences that would dilute it.

For what it’s worth, Skyrim has been embraced by millions of gamers from all around the world, and even won the Game of the Year distinction from the 2011 Spike TV Video Game Awards.

I think Skyrim is a great game but when i am online and talking to my friends who also have the game and ask me where something is i would like to show them and not spend 10-20 minutes explaining the location

Judging from patch 1.3 - I'm thinking that if the Skyrim quest bugs and glitches are giving them this much trouble to correct, a MMO would just overwhelm Bethesda due to the added difficulties involved in multi-player gameplay and interaction.

Nobody specifically said an MMO. There are plenty of good RPG's out there that are not MMO's and should never become them such as the Diablo series. If they added at least a 2 player COOP to Skyrim it would not alter the game nearly as bad as everyone might seem. They could easily add a 4 player COOP and have slight issues with the already current issues. With everything that they fix, something else is not so to limit the people who want this update is selfish to be honest. If you simply want to play alone then do not invite or allow anyone into your game, but for those of us to wish to play as a group/clan/unit, we should be allowed the opportunity. The game is a perfect setting for a low amount of player COOP and would bring not only more money to the company but bring them in more revenue from more gamers playing their series. I do not want them to alter how the game is played, just simply allow for multiple players in 1 world to help them enjoy their own gaming experience. We see it as a game enhancer just as any other expansion to any game is (ie. Shivering Isle's, Frostcrag Spire, ect.).

Translation: Our engine is too buggy to support multiplayer of any kind and we know it and we don't want to take the time to fix it.

i think, instead of having the entire map be multiplayer they should make small "dualing" areas or seperate maps for 1 V.S. 1 5 V.S. 5 10 V.S. 10, and so on. maybe just incorperate it into the initial load screen, to choose wheather or not they want to play multiplayer.
