The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a great game and the most complex to be released this year and with complexity comes a number of possible glitches, small annoyances that might negatively affect the experience of playing it.

A lot of them can be addressed using console commands, accessed by using the ` key, without actually resorting to outright cheating.

Let’s take a look at the list of console commands, in order of potential usefulness:

- resurrect – type this in the console after selecting a NPC by clicking on him in order to bring him back to life, especially useful when someone is killed accidentally by a misplaced weapons swing or spell;

- setessential <base_id> 0/1 - makes any NPC mortal or immortal, useful in those dungeons where companions have a tough time staying alive for player who hate to go solo, with most the IDs available here;

- player.modav <attribute> <amount> - targets health, carryweight, stamina, magicka and meleedamage and allows all modifications to persist after a game is loaded, useful for increasing carry weight mainly as other uses are borderline cheating because they can make a character too powerful;

- addfac <variable> 1 – moves a NPC to a faction, use the 19809 code in order to make someone a target for marriage, although depending on choice some glitches might happen;

- equipitem <formid> - use to force a NPC (mainly followers) to equip one item from their inventory, useful for making them use a better weapon than their preferred one;

- showinventory – shows a character’s inventory after you have selected a character by clicking on them;

- fov <value> – allows players to see more to the left and right of their weapons, taking in more of Skyrim’s majesty, but take into account that the base value is 75 and experiment to see what works best for you;

- set timescale to # - changes the rate at which time moves, with 1 being real time flow and 16 the current default, which can help with merchant’s stock and money issues.

The final two bend the cheating rules a little:

- additem <base_id> <value> - is useful when adding money to a merchant to get rid of items, with F 1000 the code to add gold;

- player.additem <base_id> <value> - adds items to inventory which is cheating unless you need to add a quest item for a bugged quest.

The community has put together a list of item Id codes here.

using any of these is still cheating... even something as seemingly innocent as carry weight limits factor into the whole decision making process that is part of "gameplay"... without carry weight you dont have to make decisions on what not to pick up, what armor to wear, what perks to choose (especially with the lvl 70 hvy armor perk that nullified the weight of worn armor). You can endlessly consume from the merchants and dont have to take into account the fact the buying that one last soul gem might make you have to walk all the way across town as opposed to fast travel... that system exists to force you to make decisions during the game that have a tangible impact on play, and the fewer decisions you can make the more the game is just, well... boring. Same goes for accidentally killing people... thats a real life concern translated into a game mechanic... it is the impetus behind simple common sense with weapon handling and even some laws about the use and consequences of weapons in public... Thats another thing that when translated into a game mechanic has an interes-keeping affect ("hm maybe I should be careful with these instruments of death I hold because I might accidentally kill someone I dont want to kill...)

When we have the same level of control in computer games that we have in real life I'll consider the resurrect command cheating, as it stands it can be essential if you care about NPC's (I don't particularly).

For example: I was fighting a dragon in the middle of nowhere, we where really going at it and due to the location I was just throwing everything I had at the thing, then out of nowhere comes a random NPC, no reason to be there, not qualified to take on a dragon and seemed to possess no skill other than blinding stupidity, he appears just as I've set off a fire storm scroll, it takes the dragon out bu the NPC goes down with it.

In the real world I'd probably have known he was there earlier, in the game he came from behind me and there was no chance of me hearing him, in the real world I could have told him to get lost, in the real world he would, hopefully, not have so stupid as to try to take on a dragon with a crappy dagger.

i'm thinking of using it to swap magicka points for health/stamina. I've gone on the mage path, but the only spell i use is fireball doublecast...because it's the most efficient, but with 400 magicka combined with about 80% destruction spell cost reduction and 200% mana regen(which is not a lot at all)..that's overkill...i almost never use up half the magicka i have.
That's what bethesda gets for simplifying this game (in Morrowind you had to set 100 million stats and other stuff in the character creation...here you only have race..pfff)

When you can see through your back in real life, let me know. Otherwise it's still cheating. Plenty of people have died accidentally. If people knew where everyone was there would be no hit and runs with vehicles.

fov

This only changes the distant field view value, not the hands position

Comment #8.1 by: Azure on 28 Apr 2012, 00:21 GMT

Comment #8.2 by: alex on 25 May 2012, 15:23 GMT

they do and dont. the achievements for level and attributes have been blocked for me but i dont really care. Had it on 360 and got the achievements already. got it for pc for the better graphics and mods as well as, of course, console commands, and its really fun.

tcl should be included in this list as well. I can't tell you how many times I've been physically stuck between objects or something and couldn't continue on (not only in Skyrim, but in countless other PC games) and toggling the clipping was the only way out. Also, it's to my knowledge that you can't add money to NPC's and various vendors without a mod. Henceforth, the -additem line doesn't really do any good.
