Large save games result in lag and freezes in Skyrim on PS3

It seems that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim isn't exactly going through the best of times on consoles like the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, as after a pretty annoying texture glitch on the Microsoft platform, PS3 owners are now finding out that the game becomes borderline unplayable once their save game files reach a certain size of around 5 to 6 MB.

Skyrim was released a week ago and, since then, has reached impressive sales figures, making its developer and publisher, Bethesda, quite a lot of money.

It's certainly impressed us here at Softpedia, as we awarded it a 9.5 based on the PC version, but it seems that console editions aren't exactly up to par, with some pretty serious issues and glitches affecting them, as opposed to just some hilarious ones on the PC.

After hearing that Xbox 360 owners can't install Skyrim on their hard drive because it leads to a low resolution texture problem, PlayStation 3 owners are also encountering some pretty serious issues with their copies of the massive role playing game.

It seems that once the save game files reach a certain size, of around 5 to 6MB, the game becomes extremely laggy and its framerate drops to a snail's pace, no matter what the player is actually doing in the game.

They also can't complete any other quests or even talk to NPCs once their save game files reach this a large size.

Some users have found that restarting the PlayStation 3 completely tends to eliminate some of this lag, but only for an hour or so, after which it starts appearing again, so a new restart is needed.

As you can imagine, owners of the Sony console aren't too happy, but Bethesda has yet to comment on this issue.

The studio did say that a comprehensive patch is coming to all version of Skyrim, including the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, but it's still going to take some time before it's finished and ready for release.

Until then, PS3 owners should just keep on restarting their console or delete their save games to ensure a stable Skyrim playthrough.
