Skype, one of the major players in VoIP, is preparing to launch two new premium services, SkypeIn and Skype Voicemail. This event coincides with a very important moment in the Swedish developer's growth, the fact that it has just topped 1 million downloads of the program that gave all of us the possibility to talk over the Internet, for free.
The basic Skype program, free-of-charge, allows users to turn their computer into a telephone and call other persons
that use the same VoIP communications software. The two new services are included in the latest version of the program, compatible with the Linux, Mac OS, Pocket PC and Windows operating systems, according to the statement Skype Technologies SA issued on Friday.
The SkypeIn service provides the users with a regular phone number, which can be used to receive calls from both international and mobile numbers, without paying any roaming charges. For now, the service is being tested, and it's available only in Denmark, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Sweden, Norway, UK and the United States, the users being able to purchase up to three different phone numbers. The price for this service will be of $13 for three months and $39 for the whole year.
Skype Voicemail allows the customers to receive voicemails up to 10 minutes long, which can be sent from both a normal phone and another user of this service.
"SkypeIn and Skype Voicemail enhance the basic free Skype and give friends, family and colleagues not connected to the Internet an inexpensive and convenient way to contact members of our global user base" said Niklas Zennstrom, chief executive and co-founder of the company.
