Skype Translator Preview arrives in the desktop client

Skype Translator is one of the most innovative technologies released by Microsoft lately, as it allows people speaking different languages to chat with each other using the service that automatically translates each other’s words in real time.

Previously available as a separate Modern app for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, Skype Translator will soon be integrated into the desktop version of Skype that allows Windows users to stay in touch with friends and family on any x86 or x64 device.

Microsoft says that the feature will arrive in the Windows desktop client at the end of the summer, so we still have to wait a little bit longer until it becomes available.

Four spoken languages supported

Skype Translator currently supports only four spoken languages, namely English, Spanish, Italian, and Mandarin, but also 50 written instant messaging languages, with Microsoft promising to add support for even more in the coming updates, as it is integrated in more clients currently available on the desktop and mobile platforms.

“Last month we made it easier to obtain the Skype Translator preview by removing the sign-up requirement. Since then, we have seen a 300% increase in Skype Translator usage!” Microsoft explains in a blog post today, trying to suggest that usage is on the rise for this little app, so it makes sense to integrate it directly into the Skype client and thus make it available for more people out there, even if they aren’t running Windows 8 or Windows 10.

“We are thrilled with the positive response from around the world, and especially thankful to ALL of the early adopters who downloaded the application, and use it every day! Remember: Skype Translator uses machine learning, so the more people use the technology, the better the experience for everyone!”

If you want to give it a try right now, go ahead and download the Skype Translator app from the Windows Store.
