Skype has just announced the release of a beta client for the mobile phones running under the Symbian operating system. The new software solution, version 0.9.0, comes with support for a series of Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 devices, as well as for Feature Pack 2 handsets, and is a limited beta variant of the upcoming client for Symbian-powered handsets, Skype for Symbian.

The features list the new Skype for Symbian comes around with includes: - Free Skype-to-Skype calling - Call phones with Skype credits or subscription - Receive calls on your Online Number - Instant Messaging - Group conversations - File sending and receiving.

For the time being, the new software solution has support for a number of over 15 handsets, yet it is expected to support even more in the near future, the company announced. The solution currently works on the Nokia E71, Nokia E63, Nokia E66, Nokia N82, Nokia E51, Nokia N95, Nokia N95 8GB, Nokia N81, Nokia N81 8GB, Nokia E90, Nokia N96, Nokia N85, Nokia 5320, Nokia 6210 Navigator, Nokia 6210 Classic, Nokia N78 and Nokia N79.

The maker also announced that Skype for Symbian was developed so as to work both over Wi-Fi and 3G connections. However, in case one plans on using it over 3G, one should acquire an unlimited data plan to avoid any unwanted additional costs. Those who will download and try out the new Skype for Symbian are also invited to provide the company with feedback on their experience, so that any issues with the software are eliminated and the overall user experience improved.

Skype for Symbian installs on the handset's memory and needs around 6MB of storage space. Users can either install it over the air or through the Nokia PC Suite, depending on each user's choice. Skype for Symbian 0.9.0 is available for download from Softpedia too, via this link, both for Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 and Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 handhelds.
