It turns out that Microsoft is preparing a new interface update for Skype

Microsoft is reportedly working on a new UI for the desktop version of its Skype VoIP client that would include a modern layout which bring it in line with the Metro flavor of the application.

While it's not yet clear if the news is indeed accurate or not given the fact that it emerged on April 1, Neowin is reporting that one user recently came across a testing build of Skype which included a revamped interface which clearly reminds of the one available in Windows 8, combining a new chat panel, a flat background, and new icons.

Microsoft hasn’t yet announced a Skype makeover publicly, but according to the same source, the company did suggest in a statement that preview builds of the application include some changes which could be at some point integrated into the final product.

“It is important for us to test, evaluate and learn from feedback when introducing new functionality. We regularly conduct gradual feature releases in preview so that we can learn from a smaller user base,” a Microsoft spokesperson was quoted as saying.

There’s no doubt that such a redesign would clearly come in handy to those who don’t like the Modern UI so much, so we’re still expecting some news from the Skype team on the matter. In the meantime, Skype 6.14 is still available for download if you want to get the desktop version of the client.
