If anyone was wondering if Skype's appeal will go down in the near future, the answer is definitely no, its popularity will not decrease at any cost. Especially, since the service is rapidly approaching a new milestone: 30 million concurrent users.

Those who are familiar with the ascension of this VoIP (Voice over IP) platform are aware that November 2010 was the month when the 25 million threshold was passed, followed by the 27 million simultaneous connections in January 2011.

It seems that on 21st February, 2011, 29,527,474 people were logged on to this service at the same time, chatting with people all over the world.

This number represents an increase of 4.3 % over the peak recorded in the previous month.

This is a definite sign that Skype is steadily growing and that all the predictions made in 2010 will be met and even overcome.

One of the reasons behind this rapid ascension is the increased interest of users in video call-enabled smartphones that support Skype.

Needless to say, another benefit is the fact that making calls is free and one does not need to enter their financial details in order to place a call.

Due to the success of Skype, some other companies have ventured in the VoIP area and have launched their own services, trying to replicate the huge popularity of the company.

Until this happens and a worthy competitor rises to challenge Skype and its position as the VoIP leader, worldwide users can still enjoy their chats and video calls regardless of their location or the device they use to connect to Skype.

And surely nobody will be surprised when Skype passes the 30 million concurrent connections milestone then the 50 million one, as long as this will not put a strain on its servers and cause another outage like the one that occurred in December 2010.
