Mobile phone users out there have now two less applications to enjoy on their devices, as Skype has just removed from its website the Skype Lite and Skype for Windows Mobile applications. Those who own a device powered by Microsoft's mobile operating system won't find the software solution available for download on their handsets from Skype's website, which only states that they “are no longer available.”

Skype's move is rather intriguing, especially since no specific explanation is provided for the move. As the guys over at WMPoweruser note, Skype does give a reason for this decision, but it is a rather “bizarre” one, and does not explain too much on why it chose to discontinue the two popular applications. According to the company, Skype Lite and Skype for Windows Mobile were not offering a rich experience.

“Unfortunately, Skype Lite – a version of Skype for your mobile phone – and Skype for Windows Mobile are no longer available for download from our site.
We’ve chosen to withdraw Skype Lite and Skype for Windows Mobile because we want to offer our new customers an improved mobile experience – much like the version that has proved so popular on the iPhone, and which is now available on Symbian phones. Our focus is on providing a rich user experience that allows you to enjoy free Skype-to-Skype and low cost calls as easily on the move as you do at your desktop,” Skype notes in their FAQ.

However, the company notes that those who already downloaded and installed Skype Lite or Skype for Windows Mobile on their devices will be able to continue using the software solutions. The move affects users who haven't downloaded the application and would like to do so, though a solution for them still exists at the moment. It seems that they can download Skype 3.0 for Windows Phones from Skype's website here, as well as from Softpedia, via this link for Windows Mobile PocketPCs and via this link for Windows Mobile Smartphones.
