Skype has been released as a free download for iPhone and iPod touch users. The application + service allows users to call each other for free using the VoIP protocol, via WiFi, Edge, or GPRS. Surprisingly, iPhone OS 3.0 users can use AT&T's connection to place and receive calls over 3G.

“Skype is free calls and instant messages,” says Skype Inc. “And you can call landlines and mobiles anywhere in the world at great rates. Skype is free to download and easy to use. [...] With Skype on your iPhone or iPod touch, simply sign into Skype from any WiFi zone, and call friends and family on Skype totally free. [...] Sign into Skype via 3G, Edge, GPRS or WiFi and check who's online – then instant message them whenever and wherever the mood strikes.”

Skype is compatible with iPhone and iPod touch and requires iPhone 2.1 Software Update, according to the iTunes description. The company behind the free software that allows users to place and receive calls over the Internet forgot to mention (at least in the App Store description) that iPod touch owners are also required the Apple headset with remote and mic in order to use the app on their respective devices.

Two iPhone-only features that make use of the phone's hardware attributes are taking a photo from within Skype to serve as your avatar image, and pulling a picture in from the camera roll, according to a CNET report. While still a work in progress, there's also a feature supporting conference calls. However, users can only jump in on one, not create one. Future updates may enable this feature in the future. Functionality yet to be added includes SMS support, setting up a conference calling group, purchasing SkypeOut credit directly, the ability to field a second incoming Skype call, file transfers and native Skype voicemail.
