Skype 3.0.1 is now out for iOS, adding compatibility with Skype for TV, a client that runs on a number of Panasonic and Samsung TVs, and supports iOS 4.3, an unreleased version of Apple’s mobile operating system. Users also need a compatible webcam to make Skype for TV work.

“We have released an updated version of Skype for iPhone, which introduces support for video-calling Skype for TV through the H.264 codec,” the company confirms in a blog post.

“In addition we have resolved other issues found in the previous release,” the post reads.

Improvements include support for video calling to Skype for TV and to Skype on Nokia N900, and support for the unreleased iOS 4.3.

A couple of known issues with the Skype iOS app are also mentioned.

One yet-to-be-patched bug is making video calls between iOS devices and the Nokia N900 unreliable, the company says.

The other abruptly ends Skype calls when received from a Verizon Wireless network user.

Released in December 2010, Skype 3 for iPhone delivered video calling to mobile users all around the globe.

The video calling feature works over both 3G and Wi-Fi networks and is free for Skype to Skype calls. The feature works on the iPad as well, though users can only see their friends, not vice versa.

The new release also allows users to call the people that are sitting in front of a desktop computer with a web cam.

“With Skype on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, you can make and receive calls, and instant message anyone else on Skype, wherever they are in the world,” Skype Software S.a.r.l explains in the app’s official description.

The what’s-new for this version simply states, “You can now make video calls to a wider selection of Skype clients and devices, such as Skype for TV.”
