Skype 2.0 has been released for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The new version brings 3G support. The newly supported protocol allows free Skype-to-Skype calls, but only until the end of the year, the makers of the service have confirmed. Operator charges for data will still apply.

In a move suggesting Skype is trying to squeeze everything it can from its customers, the company has announced 3G support for its mobile Skype client for iPhone OS with free Skype-to-Skype calls by the end of 2010. 3G-capable devices such as the iPhone and the iPad will fully support features such as Skype-to-Skype calls, landline or cell-phone calls, instant messages, SMS, and so on.

“With Skype on your iPhone or iPod touch you can call and instant message anyone else on Skype for free,” Skype Software S.a.r.l. says. “You can also call landlines and mobiles and send SMS anywhere in the world, at great rates. Skype is free to download and easy to use.” A list of key features is provided on iTunes, the first of which is “free Skype-to-Skype calls,” the heart of the service.

Unfortunately, “Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G are free until the end of 2010, after which there will be a small monthly fee (operator charges for data will still apply),” the first line of text from the v. 2.0.0 release notes reads. Other updates/improvements include:

- Near CD-quality sound for Skype-to-Skype calls using wideband audio (SILK codec) on iPhone 3GS, iPad and 2nd & 3rd-generation iPod touch. - Enhanced call quality indicator. - Improved start-up time. - Fast access to the dial pad from iPhone home screen.

“This version works on iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPad and iPod touch,” the company adds. “Skype requires software version 3.0 or above. Calling functionality is available on iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPad and 2nd generation iPod touch. iPod touch requires a compatible headset with a microphone,” the list of requirements is described.
