Version 2.0.1 of Skype for iOS adds multitasking support for devices running iOS 4.0, the app’s developers have confirmed. Users can now receive Skype calls and IM while other apps are running or when their device is locked. Users can also continue their call while they switch to another application.

Skype notes that multitasking is available only with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. Apple itself confirmed that the multitasking side of iOS 4.0 was only supported on new generation devices, including iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and third-generation iPod touches.

“With Skype on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, you can make and receive calls, and instant message anyone else on Skype, wherever they are in the world,” the app’s makers explain. “You can also save on international calls and text messages to phones. Skype is free to download and easy to use. With the latest version, you can now call over 3G, and keep Skype running in the background,” Skype Software S.a.r.l reveals on iTunes. In usual manner, the app’s key features are listed, followed by the typical “what’s new in this version.”

The main features of Skype for iOS include the ability to call your Skype contacts for free, wherever you may be, either on 3G or WiFi, with near CD quality sound; call and text phones anywhere in the world directly from your phonebook; instant message for an instant response.
