Skullgirls Encore, the really popular downloadable fighting game from Lab Zero, has just received a brand new free update on the PS3 platform bringing forth a special DLC character called Big Band, the first free male fighter for the game, complete with plenty of crazy powers.

Skullgirls appeared quite some time ago and immediately impressed fighting game fans with its great art style, not to mention the impressive mechanics and the wacky powers wielded by the different female fighters in the title.

Since then, developer Lab Zero has been forced to re-release the game as Skullgirls Encore, and it organized a really successful crowdfunding campaign in order to ensure more DLC characters.

After launching the first all-new fighter, in the form of Squigly, the second one has just been released on PS3 via the Big Band update, which weighs in at 882MB.

According to the PS blog, the new update brings a fresh character called Big Band, which is the first male fighter joining the roster of Skullgirls Encore.

"Once a regular beat cop known as Ben Birdland, he fell flat when he got on the wrong side of New Meridian’s corrupt police force. Birdland was broken and bent out of shape by his former colleagues, but was tuned up by Dr. Avian and ASG Lab 8. Now he is armed with a full ensemble of pneumatic weaponry, transforming him into the full fortissimo instrument of justice: Big Band," the studio said.

According to Lab Zero, Big Band is a high risk yet high reward character that has a versatile moveset for all sorts of situations, but many of the attacks will leave players vulnerable if they miss or misjudge their opponent.

"Big Band’s 'Bagpipe Blues' taunt actually powers up two of his supers: Super-Sonic Jazz and Tympany Drive. So if you can end a combo and squeeze in a taunt while your opponent is knocked down, the next time you hit could lead into some really huge damage," the studio added.

Players will also be able to parry incoming attacks with Big Band, but they'll still suffer a bit of damage, although they can easily retaliate against their foes.

The new character is also good when it comes to playing as part of a team, as he can add fresh variations to Ensemble Attacks and a really impressive Blockbuster one, not to mention a custom trumpet solo attack that can be tweaked by players.

The new Big Band update for Skullgirls Encore is already available for download for PS3 via PSN. Check out a video of the new fighter in action below.
