Wireless speakers seem to be a hot topic this week, as Panasonic isn't the only one releasing something of the sort. Skullcandy has also made its contribution, in the form of the Air Raid.

Skullcandy is one of those consumer electronics device makers that don't really mind if their products are a bit expensive, as long as they do what they're supposed to do and look good too.

That is what led to the creation of the Air Raid, although it's true enough that the wireless speaker doesn't follow the same idea of “elegance” as, say, the Harman Kardon Nova Bluetooth Speaker.

Not that we were expecting it to. After all, Skullcandy has its own ideas about what “good-looking” means, and the Air Raid simply follows a different theme. Instead of a glossy sphere, it chose a solid, robust, rugged construction.

Even in the press release, Skullcandy says the Air Raid is “built like a tank and loud enough to wake the dead.”

In fact, Skullcandy wanted it to be the loudest in its category. And since its category is that of wireless speakers, that was a fairly tall order.

After all, the louder and better a speaker is, the more energy it tends to use. And yet the company somehow managed to squeeze a battery life of 14 hours.

That said, the Air Raid uses 50 mm drivers, which can produce 50% more sound volume than the competition “without sacrificing sound quality.”

Add to that the damage-proof outer enclosure (beer proof, weatherproof, beach proof and drop proof-shielded) and you don't really have much to complain about.

On that note, the Air Raid also has a range of 10 meters / 30 feet and the ability to connect two Bluetooth-enabled devices to it at the same time.

Sales of the Skullcandy Air Raid should already be underway for $149.99 / €112.
